Spoilt Princesses moaning about Media Coverage of Wolves

Nothing that some of us on here havent been saying for months/years tbf.

The E&S stuff is cobblers really. Older folk won't pay for pay walled is true but they're also the generation who still walk to the shop for a copy. I'd be stunned if the readership of papercopy was anything less than 85% of the 55+ age group.

There's nothing stopping The Athletic employing someone who would challenge the club properly (plenty of writers on the same site for other clubs do it) or write anything incisive or interesting, it isn't as if PTS (or Spiers before him) gets extra access as a result of being a glorified club mouthpiece.

You'd have to ask them why they don't. Maybe Wolves just aren't very important to them.

You couldn't get more of a control freak than Marinakis and yet Forest don't get Pravda coverage on there, far from it.

There is a dearth of quality output for Wolves, that goes for fan-created stuff as well as the mainstream media. ALL of the Wolves podcasts are varying degrees of rubbish.

(Not bigging myself up here at all incidentally. I didn't write anything at all for three entire years for a start, and what I do isn't anything special)

That's giving me crowd funding vibes, not a great look
It's complete and utter bollocks. A sign the E&S don't think that investing in possible stories about the prominent Premiership club in their catchment area is worth sending a journalist to. The world has changed. The E&S haven't got a fucking clue.

I think this is exactly what it is, they aren't really that fussed about Wolves or any other club beyond the obvious. They took away the podcast because we aren't a team they want to focus on. I'd imagine that's one of the reasons why Spiers wanted to do something else. Wolves stories that involve another club get siphoned to their writer with PTS colouring in some background, they even had Spiers do their Kilman one, or if it's a Sky 6 team Ornstein. Their Wolves content and certainly their comments are geared towards the US audience and if the number of comments equates to readership figures then it's not many. I don't read a PTS article unless someone links it on here and that's as a subscriber, although next month that'll stop even at the £12 a year I currently pay. They are also losing / cutting reporters on US sports, replacing them with younger/ cheaper options or for smaller teams not replacing then at all. When you click a link it takes you via a New York Times header so at some point I think they'll just fold it in and the likes of PTS will be binned.

Forest get a disproportionate amount of content because Danny Taylor uses his role as national writer to do stuff about them, which although well written pisses me off as they already have a full time Forest correspondent.

It's interesting that they seem to be engaging a bit with Dazzling Dave, because he's a safe cheerleader type. I could be ruder, but won't

I think the most shocking thing is him classing "gossip"...aka made up shit as club content

The 'Jeff Shi U-Turn' article is the most shameful piece of Wolves related media anyone has ever produced (and I'm counting the @Deutsch Wolf Manc Radio appearance in that so you know it's a low bar... ;))

I wasn't ever likely to pay for their shit but I certainly won't be after that. I'll still follow LL on Twitter as he's semi useful for providing a bit of extra context to transfer info about half an hour after the real journalists have broken the initial story.

PTS might as well not exist. Haven't read any of his solo articles in over a year and I actually have an Athletic subscription.

The Wolves coverage now is worse than it was 10 years ago when we had just been promoted back into the Championship.

I got a direct tweet from Judah saying “it’s £2 mate”, when I questioned his real intentions behind his “PODENCE & YERSON LOOKING AMAZING” tweets after one training session. Blatantly trying to drum up some business.

The blokes an arsehat.

Has anyone actually paid for the coverage?
On the one hand he's right, in the general scheme of things what the e&s charge at a fiver a month if you get it annually when they are discounting, is nothing. The price of a pint, what you put into the collection for that woman at work who's leaving who you never liked anyway, or when your kid comes home from school with a sponsorship form to raise money for a new piano. It's less than the 20p a day it was 35 years ago in the print age, with a lot more Wolves content. So from just the financial perspective it's relative peanuts.

The e&s were left between a bit of a rock and a hard place. Local journalism loses money and aren't owned by local philanthropists, with the vast majority of people now consuming content online for free. There's essentially 2 models available, the make it pretty much unreadable option due to the number of adverts and popups, like the Birmingham Mail or the subscriber route they've gone down.

Then it essentially comes down to what you are offering, which if you are only buying for the Wolves content isn't enough for me. It's not that it isn't differentiated, nobody else offers training clips or interviews with players, it's that it's just not particularly interesting and feels like an extension to what the club offer, which I'm also not interested in. LLs writing is OK, probably the best since Instone left, but the world has moved on from match reports and player ratings for games the vast majority of your audience watched live in some format or another. I want insight and measured criticism where required and at least a degree of independence. Doubling, trebling and quadrupling down on the PSR stuff, trotting out again when required in January isn't independence, it's getting Shi's message out there to an audience a decent % of which will take on trust. Judah then being all smug about it when Everton got their deduction was unedifying and still didn't make their reporting accurate even though he used it to claim it did.

Sometimes they don't help themselves, their Summer trips aren't being covered by the subscriptions, they have a sponsor, but it's easy to see how LLs Tweet could be read that way. Ham-fisted and brings them more grief that was unnecessary.

What was also disappointing is it looked like for the first time in a while someone was holding the club accountable when they came in on the side of the fan's anger. Alas

I've just read Madeley's season preview. No thought has gone into it at all. Look at this FFS

The player with a point to prove is…
Matt Doherty. A modern-day Wolves hero, the Republic of Ireland international’s place in Molineux history is already assured courtesy of his deeds under Nuno Espirito Santo during his decade-long first stint at the club. But his appearances were limited last season after rejoining in the summer following three seasons at Tottenham Hotspur and when he did play his performances were mixed. Now 32, Doherty needs to show the fans that some of the old magic remains.

Under the 'game to look out for' section he's picked... Everton away. Why? Because it's the last time he'll get to go to Goodison. What the fuck has that got to do with Wolves?

Which Euro 2024 or Copa America player would be an ideal signing? He's made a stupid joke about Liverpool or Arsenal sending VVD or Saliba on loan.

No research, no effort, it's barely even relevant to the club he's paid to report on, he's managed to spell Gary O'Neil's name with 2 'L's...

It's the first time I've read an article of his for months and a reminder not to be tempted to read anything else of his.

Thought I'd try the E&S podcast again. Skipped the first 5 minutes of dreadful guff and lasted a further 20 with the last 5 being 'this bloke is a complete spoofer'*

Genuinely dreadful condescending uneducated nonsense.

Frankly, press conferences are pretty much a waste of everyone's time. It's the same standard repartee most of the time with no real news. Head Coaches aren't going to give away their game plan beforehand and they really aren't going to say much about it after. It's the usual platitudes, air's and graces and fob offs that say nothing and mean nothing.
