Wolves - Man City Pre-Season Cup Final Match Thread

It was possibly one of the worst penalty shootouts I've ever seen but I was far more excited than I should have been about winning :icon_lol:

If it exists anywhere online look up Bala Town v Cardiff Met in the Welsh Europa League Play Off Final. Nothing will ever top the shitness of that shoot-out

Thats the one. 3 of the pens are essentially passes to the keeper.

Just before the shoot out though there is a great bit of action where Bala hit the same spot on the cross bar in just 5 seconds of action. Glorious football. I watched the game on S4C and had the English comms option on, I have no idea who was doing the co-comms but he was a misrable fecker and even moaned about the Cardiff keeper for doing "the fashionable sideways goalkick from his hands"

We really shouldn't be considering Traore at RWB given that Jonny can play there if Doc is unavailable. It's fine against shite like Cardiff where he has almost zero defending to do, but otherwise he's pretty much always penned back and has no impact going forward.

I understand it's another option, but I really don't ever want to see it again.

Just had a look, fucking hell!

But if we are considering him as an option (like we did v Cardiff last season) then these are the games to do it in. I doubt he will ever play RWB v Man City or Liverpool etc in the Prem unless there is a major issue with injury or suspension between the other 3 but it is better to chuck him in and see how he copes now rather than chancing it at the time. From today they will have a better clue what they need to work on should it have to happen in an actual important game

We've seen him do it against Cardiff, we know he can play there at a push.

I think today was just Nuno giving him more minutes for the sake of it.

Adama will probably start there next week against Crusaders. It gives us something different, there will be games (like Cardiff last season) where it makes some sense to play him there. Also, when we are potentially chasing a game, rather than it being an impulse decision it is another thought out way of adding to our attacking threat in those situations.

Because he will be RWB v Crusaders, won't just be for the sake of it. Its clear he is doing with Traore what he did with Saiss last pre-season, trying him out in a postion he can play in but under different circumstances to what he would normally do in that role.

I think the 11 that have started the 2 games in China will start next week. Hopefully get the job done and move things around a week later in Ireland

Thought he looked fine today, surprisingly keen to get stuck in when required and showed some good interplay with the ball opposed to his old head down and peg it routine. Only real annoyance I saw was when he got into the box from wide first half and had an easy lay off but ignored it, dallied and crossed pointlessly into a crowded box.

I'd expect top teams to be able to exploit him defensively in competitive games but looking how far forward the wingbacks often spend a lot of their time I think he could be an option there.

Yeah that was for Dendoncker and instead he tried to cross on his left foot!!

I agree though, he actually combined with others at times and he had a lot more space to run into (although this was more down to us needing to defend pretty deep)

Yeah I dont buy it. We have one defensive lwb/rwb, one offensive lwb, one offensive rwb and a right winger who wr are trying to play as an offensive rwb.
If you play against cardiff sides who defend with 10, with doc injured it makes sence to play your best offensive backs (vinagre and traore). Against everyone else, play your two best wingbacks, vinagre and jonny in the right. Vinagre is a better offensive player than traore and hes better defensively too. Not to mention he has the potential to develop into a world class player and we have to give him maximum minutes

Yeah I dont buy it.

Drop Nuno a fax and let him know. Manager trying something out in pre-season, nowt to buy or believe.

From what is happening, Nuno doesn't want to play Jonny on the right so is looking at an inhouse option so next season his options are LWB - Jonny and Ruben and RWB Doc and Traore

If the idea fails during training matches it won't happen. This time last year it looked like Saiss (an international centre back) was going to be ahead of Bennett at RCB. he played all his pre-season games there and started in our final pre-season. It was decided it wasn't a great idea to switch Bennett so Saiss went back to being back up for midfield and an option as emergency cover in defence.

He showed some neat touches at times today I thought, much more intricate than you usually get from him. Can remember one ball going out to him deep in Wolves' half when he cushioned a nice little pass inside to either Dendoncker or Bennett which started a nice little passing triangle that played them out of trouble. Had another one in a similar position where he got boxed in after a couple of passes and managed to use his pace and trickery to skip past the first opponents then get fouled, nice little get of jail card to have.

Think he looks better suited to playing there in games where Wolves dominate than to try and play in a narrower position further forward. Even managed a little Doherty special coming very narrow and nearly being played in as the furthest man forward at one point in the first half.

Don't put too much stall in pre season kickabouts. Overactions on here both during and after the game for what is essentially a fitness exercise with a bit of experimentation thrown in.

Also I don't see how anyone can claim Jonny is our best rwb given how little time he's spent there playing for us and after Doherty's last two seasons.

That really should have been to Neves running on to it on the edge of the box if he'd have looked up properly.

Spoilsport.

Uhrencup last season and the Premier League Asia trophy this season... we really are living the dream.

I wasn't really referring to that but when we've been rolled over in previous years by the likes of Shrewsbury in pre season results were as important as they are now.

I was referring more to criticism of player performance or team selection. I think if we'd have lost the shootout some would have moaned about Nuno taking the first team off.

Again good old bitching on twitter about it being a preseason trophy.

The fact we won it and beat city will do our youngsters confidence wonders
