Wolves History Thread

I love how pleased McLoughlin is!

That commentary on the Bolton game is magnificent, that type you used to hear all the time back then, just so biased and where so many parodies came from.

He can barely bring himself to say Dennison has scored, and the "Oh no" on Bully's goal...is just :ROFLMAO:

50% of his entire library of Wolves goals right there.

His other two were also in the same game, scored both when we beat Swindon 2-1 at home in Jan 1990 (came on as sub for an injured Mutch before HT).

Crazy to think that Turner felt McLoughlin, Colin Taylor and Paskin were the better back up options for Bull and Mutch than Collymore. (I get it with Taylor there was potential there, but the other two were awful)

We got a broken, way past it Wayne Clarke (briefly) as well.

And Jackie Gallagher pre-dating them.

Considering how well Turner had done spotting the partnership of Mutch and Bull, he struggled to spot other forwards and didn't seem too keen on giving youth a chance?

I was at that Bolton game. Needed a police escort out of Do It All after being chased in there by their hooligans

Our youth set up was a joke in fairness

I suppose he did sign and play Lee Mills late in his time here, I wasn't much of a fan but he had a decent enough career.

Turner didn't sign Mutch and Collymore wasn't let go because of his football ability
Having listened to Collymore's account of the reasons he was released and having not heard anything other than rumours to the contrary (that helped cover up a huge error by Turner) it's my conclusion he was.

*and that's why I said "spotted a partnership" regarding Mutch and Bull.

Off the top of my head, "next big thing" youth/Academy strikers that never were:

Colin Taylor
Scott Voice
Shaun Bradbury
Lee Mills (as I say, did alright afterwards but he wasn't very good here)
Glen Crowe
Dominic Foley
Richard Leadbeater (now a vicar!)
Jermaine Easter
Jason Roberts (this was our own stupid fault)
Mark Jones (hype around him was off the scale)
Leon Clarke
Liam Hughes
James Spray
Sam Winnall
Jake Cassidy
Liam McAlinden
Bradley Reid
Niall Ennis (injuries tbf)
David Moli
Ibrahim Keita
Donovan Wilson
Bright Enobakhare
Benny Ashley-Seal

Adam Proudlock was mostly a winger in his Academy days and did have one actual good first team season before he got fat and grew an inexplicable mullet. Darren Roberts properly came out of nowhere and promptly disappeared back to nowhere.

Mills is a weird one, as he was 22 when we signed him. Although 90s footballers did seem to start a bit later then?

Mark Jones hype was huge, that supposed clause that we had to pay Villa am extra few quid if he played x amount of games really hampered his development.

Foley scored a couple of decent goals, Crowe was a very stocky bugger wasn't he? Scored a good goal at....Charlton? But that was about it.

Selling Jason Roberts around the time we had Claridge and Paaetelainen was criminal. (Oh and flogging Freedman, Dougie was a low key favourite of mine)

I bloody loved Freedman. McGhee being a prick as per.

Scored against us as late as 2006 when Mick was in charge.

1hr 44 for Glen Crowe's moment of glory. Decent strength and a powerful hit but appalling keeping!

Also great memories of players turning up in smart club suits and no earbuds/bins cutting them off from fans!

Rankine wearing 10
We should come up with a full XI of them. Can't really have a #1 unless we use it as an excuse to call Roger Hansbury a poodle permed wanker.

van Damme - 2
Thomas - 3 (how did this even happen, he didn't play LB or LWB in that game surely!)
McNamara - 7
Irwin - 8
Thompson - 9
Rankine - 10
Ward - 11 (sorry Wardy but as you played LB for five years you should have changed)
