A brilliant day out despite not getting home till 11.30pm (though have to say that Virgin trains service & comfort knocks Cross Country's into a cocked hat)
More entertainment in 90 mins than I got in all games together that I went to last season. The real impetus came from the new guys in Texeira & Jon Dadi, though it was good to see last seasons players trying to join in the vibe & clearly they had taken on board Zenga's philosophy in that he appears to want to take the game to the opposition rather than sit back & wait for things to happen.
The defence inc Ikeme did fine despite the slightly strange formation with Coady retaining his position at right back, though in truth Reading put them under no pressure & produced nothing of note. Ikeme had 1 routine save & came confidendently for a few crosses, but other than that only touched the ball to take goal kicks or clear a back pass. Tells us nothing about whether they have got over any defensive brain farts and will get sterner tests than this.
Midfield 3 did performed as expected, nothing particularly brilliant, but harried and pressed effectively (particularly Saville who was the pick of the 3) - there are it seems further additions coming in here so don't expect to see them together too often from now.
The front 3 of Texeira/Mason & Bodvarsson were the real deal though. Texeira a player who can control the ball, has vision for the pass but is still incredibly hard working was a joy to watch. The move he made from the right beating 2 players & shooting (only just over) fully deserved a goal of the season accolade. Bodvarsson is a hero already - runs himself into the ground & is a nightmare for defenders as he wont stay in 1 place & is strong enough to hold them off. Also quick enough to turn and run onto his own flick ons which seemed to confuse Reading - really deserved a goal for his all round play. Mason is not at their level, but is improving now he has support - needs to improve his shooting, but think that this is a confidence issue.
Finally if we are going to do the Icelandic thunderclap in the SB we really need to turn up for practice sessions led by Jon Dadi if we want to continue this.
