Wolves 2 - Derby 3, Verdict Thread.

Well that was fucking dreadful yet still we could have got something from the game even 3 points had the ref not been a cunt. It does show that Lambert will have something to work with but he's probably going to have to drop his captain and several others.

Lonergan - Apparently his fault that they scored the first goal, yes his kick was shit but there was then a build up that we failed to defend properly after that. They didn't break quickly to score. He was outstanding apart from that and i've been very critical of him but shot stopping was of the highest standard.

Doherty - When we have the ball he can run all day but when we haven't looks like a carthorse. A threat going forward but can't defend.

Iorfa - Not the Iorfa we know at all. Doesn't look comfortable at centre back and just looks shot confidence wise as he doesn't have a clue what to do with the ball.

Batth - I'll start with the positive, he looks better on the ball. Now the negatives, every bit of defending he has to do he simply isn't capable of. Gets beat in the air too much, out of position constantly, doesn't communicate, doesn't lead, doesn't mark players that he should. Booing him isn't the thing to do but i just think fans wanted to show that he shouldn't be in the team, it's not good but probably only way to do it. Literally heard that we should support him because he's a local lad so many times it pisses me off, couldn't care less where he is from.

CBJ - Looks good on the ball but looks like a kid who hasn't played many games and is getting found out more and more. If he's going to play he needs protection.

Coady - Not sure what he actually does, not good enough on the ball and doesn't win enough tackles or break up play enough.

Edwards - Runs around a lot and i can see why fans like him as he looks like he's trying more than the others and probably deserved his goal and it was another fantastic late run but not sure all his running would matter if we replaced him with someone who was just a better footballer.

Teixeira - Got bullied a couple of times but that was because he was asked to play central midfield, he either needs to play on the left or right behind the striker where he can get into spaces away from players like Bradley Johnson. Felt for him when he was taken off as you could see it clearly got to him and the same fans that sang Batth's name after he was booed were the fans that were calling him shit and to fuck off back to Benfica.

Costa - We didn't get him into the game until the second half and then he showed how much of a threat he can be. Did fantastically well to head the ball down jsut before his goal and then to follow it on. We must play to get the best out of him.

Cavaleiro - Was outstanding second half and showed why we played £7 million for him. Like Costa we need to play to get the best out of him as he is one of the better players. Another player that for some reason was hounded by a few fans in the second half despite him clearly being the best player. Should have had a penalty too.

Bod - On his own first half but was just starting to have an impact and then got taken off. Did well to make something our of Costa's knockdown for the first goal.

SUBS

Saville - Didn't really do a lot, got booked right after coming on. Got involved in the second half but never really a threat.

Dicko - Looked like he was slowly improving and did a couple of things the old Dicko would have done. Needs more games still but positive signs.

Wallace - May as well not have come on, didn't do anything.

I know there has been a lot of talk about the fans and the majority in the Southbank helped the side and made a lot of noise in the second half but i see the booing of Batth has got most of the headlines. Booing him isn't going to help and it shouldn't happen but neither should telling Teix, Costa and Cav to fuck off and go back to where ever and calling them shit. This was mostly done by a few of those who were singing in support of Batth. If you are going to sing in support of Batth not sure telling other players to fuck off basically because they are foreign makes a lot of sense.

Referee was shit in the second half, no way is it a foul on Ince and it's an absolute stonewaller on Cav. Anyone who says different just wants to be the odd one out and look good because they are being different.

Why should booing him only make him worse? Why shouldn't it galvanize him into playing better?

Depends on a players mentality. Some will let their heads drop and hide from the ball some will try to work harder and be galvanised

DB had a better second half, as did all of the team. But I feel that was more due to the half time break than booing.

Oh, I agree it will vary, but as Batth is the captain you would think that he would be mentally very strong.

Danny Batth has been excruciatingly bad lately, and cost us a stupid number of goals and therefore points. Best thing is to get him out of the firing line and then replace him in January.

I'm not a great fan of DW but I thought he was very good today.
If he is going to be playing on a regular basis I would make him Captain ,

Danny Watth? Dave Wedwards?

DB only had a better second half as we played more of it in their half & he wasn't under the same amount of pressure. Still a couple of ocassions that he was out of position which fortunately Derby didn't take advantage of.

With a young defence with Iorfa & CBJ in there we need a leader who can organise them properly. Batth is 26 now the Captain and should be the one doing that - don't think he is capable of it.

Isn't it a tactical flaw that Zenga and Rob Edwards have set teams up to put DB in that position? There has been a general consensus on this forum that we are not defensively sound and therefore we need to attack teams and score instead of grinding out results.

Think that's what RE was trying to do today with the initial selection - didn't work as everyone played rubbish at the start & we concede early again

The defence and first half performance cost us the 3 points. Yes the ref was poor but on another day we could have been 4 down at half time

Truth be told with our defence we could start with a front three of bale Ronaldo and Messi and we would still struggle to outscore teams.
We need 2 new centre backs a new striker and as quality goalkeeper. Add to that a nasty holding midfield spoiler and that would-be my Xmas list.

As we said last season

1st game since we beat leeds with a last minute winner.

1st hlf disgraceful
2nd half ok

Lonergan - 3 2nd half saves do not make up for 1st half
Borthwick - 3 awful not a clue
Doherty - 5 only difference between 2 full backs one was totally clueless one had hakf an idea going forward.
Batth - 2 not good enough
Iorfa - 2 useless
Coady - 3 terrible
Texierra - 1 say no more
Edwards - 8.only wolves player to actually turn up
Costa-2
Bodvarsson 1
Cavaleiro 5
Subs
Saville 3
Dicko- 6
Wallace - 3

Ref 4 got the 2 penalty decisions wrong.

No heart no passion no idea no clue.

Thank god for edwards .
Batth has to be sold i hear Willenhall town need a sub centre half.
Iorfa may be salvagable with some experience beside him.

Still raging over the perfomance

Thought Deutsch Wolf made some valid points on our whatsapp tbf
Thanks man.

Lonergan, Doherty, Edwards, Coady, Saville, Wallace and on this form Batth need hoying in the sea, criminally poor footballers.

Only cos I was wrong about the lonergan save we were discussing. I'm not backing down on Edwards and Doherty being two of our best players this season (top scorer in the league and top assists respectively...)

Been out all day so just catching up with the game now.

Awful defending for the first two goals. As much as I criticise CBJ I don't blame him at all for the first. He had to challenge Hughes because Coady had just stopped. Literally stopped still and stood there ball watching instead of following his runner.

2nd one was a comedy of errors. Awful from Iorfa, a casual non challenge from Doherty on Hughes, then no-one tracking Bent. Good goal from them but awful from us.

Nice goal from Bod/Costa and you could sense it was coming for about 5 mins before.

Another unlucky penalty and a clash of legs brings another player down for a penalty, just like Iorfa at Villa. Then a non decision to deny Cavaleiro a pen straight after. A bit soft maybe and he made it look worse than it was, but thigh to thigh contact for sure. Very, very frustrating. If the ref is going to give them for incidental contact then he has to give both of them.

Another great strikers run from Edwards and another goal. Play him as an attacker and he comes alive. Play him as a holding midfielder and that's where he's ineffective. Hopefully Lambert has seen this in the last two games.

Once again though it's too little too late. Poor first half performances and then looking fired up and pushing for goals once we're behind. It needs tweaking somehow and that's where Lambert will have to earn his money.

I like the look of having both Costa and Cavaleiro playing on the wings permanently. Unsure on Tex in the middle, great on the ball at times but very lightweight and often loses the ball or looks for fouls where there isn't any because he's holding on to the ball for too long. I still think Prince deserves a go there in that position. Probably in a Saiss/Edwards/Prince triumvirate. Prince would give you a bit more steel there to compete in the middle.

The Iorfa at CB experiment needs to stop too. Put him back at RB where he's comfortable, or not at all. Move Doherty back to LB too where he's had his best form. Hopefully Lambert will take a look at the defence and not spend 10 games chopping and changing them round looking for something to magically work.

Other than his poor clearance I thought Lonergan had a good game.

Wallace aside (as he hadn't played many games but is seemingly just not going to Cut it with us) we have known this for a good while and yet it is largely the same players who seem undroppable. Hopefully Lambert will see this and be able to replace them (with new signings in Jan or players at club)

Ince you cheating bastard

Watched the highlights specifically to look at the 2 penalty shouts (am ignoring Doherty's as the defender clearly got the ball & Doherty just fell over his leg)

The Ince one seems to be foot to foot & Ince goes down easily - Cavaleiro one is thigh to thigh & again goes down easily (& no Tom Ince holding your hands up to indicate that you weren't doing anything doesn't mean that you weren't)

Could easily see neither being given or indeed both, but if one is then the other should equally be given as there was little to choose between them - consistency not applied in this case

Absolutely. We have no defensive coaching worth its name and haven't this calendar year. Glad to see our Sporting Director has addressed this....
