Wolves 0-0 Burnley: Verdict Thread

It's funny when Lage came everyone (me included) thought we'd score loads but be vulnerable at the back, it's ended up the complete opposite. We're like some 80's Italian team at the minute.
I think for me that highlights how intelligent Lage is at adapting to the squad he has. He has certainly cut his cloth to suit. Its not fair on him in the slightest though.

There is a player on loan to Milan called Pietro Pellegri. In 2018 a 17yr old Pellegri moved for a then record fee of €25m. His record at that point was played 9 scored 3 for Genoa. He played 22 times in that first season, mainly from the bench.

Pellegri has not played for Monaco since and is now on loan to AC Milan where they have an option to buy him for €6m. He's currently played a handful of minutes over 5 games and Milan are looking at ways to end the loan early.

Fabio is going down this road unless he gets out on loan and gets games somewhere that can aid his development. He isn't good enough right now.
Tbf Pellegri had multiple serious injuries didn't he? But your overall point is valid

Pop quiz kids, what is the best option here?
Defender to abandon traore and mark raul as there is a 1% chance Adama scores in any situation, let alone a 1v1?

Agreed.

What is our route to goal though, what are actually trying to achieve? How do we look to score?

You only have to watch Liverpool play and they make the game look so simple. They get Trent/Robertson in a position to cross and then they just hit an area and there’s always 3 players minimum in their making a run. The players know when to time their run as they know it’s coming in. Do our players know when it’s getting crossed? It gets crossed when there’s no one in their and then it doesn’t get crossed when their queing up for it. Plus the timings are all off because they always look like they’ve never played with each other before so even if we A) get players in the box B) cross it, it’s easily defended.

I don’t know what the answer is. Change of system? Better players (always helps but this isn’t a cheap squad)? Or better coaching?

I think the instruction is as much of a problem as them being limited. Our wingbacks receive the ball deep often standing or at low pace (similar to Trent at Liverpool) but don't have that crossing ability. Ideally they both need to be released running onto the ball similarly to Chelsea as mark identified on another thread. That part of Lage's tactics are a bit of a mess.

Waited for a while to read the posts, which a) are very balanced and b) expresses our disappointment that we couldn’t see Burnley off. As DM mentions they are a horrible team that exists to survive in the Prem.
Quite happy to be dicked by 5 by the big boys as long as they scrat their way to 40 points.
Enough of them, but on the game, true we were toothless and some of the decision making was poor, but we did press and recycle the ball well. Just seemed like one of those games where the ball just wouldn’t sit down for us when we were in their box either through a pisspoor first touch or a deflection that took the ball away from our forwards. 2 points dropped for me.
Perhaps the biggest positive and worthy of a mention is the form of Max Kilman, no not related or know him! but he makes defending look easy, calm, classy and assured. In fact interesting to watch his body language immediately after he has broken up an attack, interplayed with some neat stuff or put his body on the line to block a shot, he looks like a 12 year old kid playing on the park with his mates, he’s so ‘matter of fact’…like, that was easy! What’s for tea mom? I don’t even think he knows how good he can be (potentially) which is refreshing. We have a diamond in the rough here. To be fair I’m not expecting bugger all out of the Liverpool, Chelsea or Man City games but will be focused mainly on his performance against better quality opposition.
I know it may not be worth much but just my opinion…..on an opinion forum 😊

Not expecting bugger all means you expect something. I admire your optimism!

Always expect the worse, and then the worse that can happen is they meet your expectations :)

But what he wrote says he isn't expecting the worst...
Like many on here I’ve supported Wolves for decades, seen the worst and some of the best over the years. And like many, even the most pessimistic know what they can achieve if they all put a shift in, even Adama. Trouble is we never know what’s going to be served up, we’re like a curates egg, good in parts bad in others.
We ‘could’ beat all of them but realistically we are not consistent at the moment or have the quality over 90 minutes to beat them.

Too slow and ponderous, by the time the wingbacks had the ball and were ready to cross Burnley were set defensively. Crossing is unlikely to succeed against Burnley at the best of times.

Defence were good and didn't get bullied like we have done, although maybe that's because Barnes was missing. Either way I took a little satisfaction seeing Wood get taken off
Dyche is a bit of a twat but I LOVED watching him rip into Wood for being petulant about the sub.

Norwich are now the only team to have scored fewer goals. We haven't in 50% of our league games

All the more reason to appreciate our stout defense. ;)
Especially when it consists of some players that a lot of us would have got rid of a season ago

ps. don't come over here dropping your 's' into defence young man :)

It's pretty poor alright , and will catch us out when it comes to league position no doubt - goal difference and all that .

Really hard to see it changing . Neto returning will help - but no date for that has been flagged , which suggests it's further away than we might hope for .
With regard to Jiminez - all top strikers need great support around them , from either fellow attackers or creative midfielders . He's missing that on a number of occasions .
Jiminez too tries too many tricks . His one on one against West Ham that he messed up when clean through was one such example . Keep it simple Raul .

One the other hand , Lage is dead right to begin with the defence in terms of putting things right . Start at the back and work your way up .

.
That was purely down to Fabianski coming out fast and keeping himself big, so cutting the available angles down. That was good goalkeeping rather than Raul messing up a 'trick'

Referred to him as oblivious to his surroundings in the matchday thread and fairly sure someone disagreed with me. Mad.

I was screaming at the time “pass!” and my mind hasn’t changed. In a team like us, where goals are at an absolute premium, he simply has to slide Raul in there.
