Wolves 0-0 Burnley: Verdict Thread

Question for those that were there - atmosphere sounded *really* flat tonight (and even the presenter mentioned it at the end of the programme. Also heard quite a ring of booing at full time. Is that representative of what it was like in the ground?

Edit - and yes, another vote of approval to the ref, he did a very good job in what was a strongly contested game

I heard a few groans and isolated low key boos around me in the BW. Nothing significant.

They came for a 0-0, they got a 0-0.

Astounded that Adama got MOTM. He was wank and it's not unlucky that he hits the bar, he had three chances there to pass the ball to Raul, you take it on then you have to score.

Back three were good, Moutinho was excellent, we do lack craft and drive though. Donck was fine but you know what he is.

Great anticipation from Sa on the one potential chance, otherwise had nowt to do.

We'll have the point. Not ideal but we just need to get to 40+ and go from there.

Raul's movement was awful tonight. So many times I watched him just kind of stand there, not moving into space but not occupying either CB. It was weird.

If Bruno doesn't trust Fabio when Raul looks like that, we need a new striker ASAP.
And you didnt think Adama did as well, apart from his marauding runs towards the truck headlights, he only ever offered himself a few times for Hwang and Raul. The bloke doesnt want to be here for me, the sooner we get a few dollars for him the better in my opinion.

The boos were barely audible in the North Bank upper, but they were present.

Feel a bit for the match going faithful, must be frustrating giving up a solid portion of your days to see zero goals. But given how many had us down as relegation fodder then can’t really moan about being 6th.

Just annoying with so many other draws tonight we couldn’t pull away a little. Ah well -if our players were more consistent/ capable they wouldn’t be our players

Adama proved what he is tonight and I'd be happy if I never saw it again.
My lift home didn't make it passed Pontefract and so I have a series of trains home through the night spending about 4hrs on platforms. Oh joy!

Burnley always make it hard work and in many ways we asked more of them than in other recent matches. I thought they played Raul exceptionally well and their focus on him opened up chances in front of their back four for Hwang and Traore, which were not taken. Staggering to think anyone at the game would have given Traore MOTM. Kilman perhaps? I thought he was very good again.

Didn’t notice any booing around me at all.

It’s because he “looks” dangerous. Owen Hargreaves - “he’s unplayable at times, if only he could Improve his decisions and end product”. How long can you say this for? 26 in Jan…

Alehouse wankers. Can't wait until they get relegated.

Don’t get your hopes up, you know they’ll come straight back

Trincao did some good things when he came on. Seemed to link up consistently with Semedo (I know it was only 10 minutes).

You could write a lot about our inability to score goals, but the absolute biggest issue is the wing backs, so much goes through them and so little productive comes out of them. Semedo actively damages the team, I don't blame him for it as we are asking him to do.things he can't, but tonight he was effectively playing as an attacker, one who can't cross, shoot, beat a man and has a heavy first touch. RAN on the other side not much better if at all, but we use him less

Nice to be back at molineux shame about the result and game mind.

1st half comfortably the better team without really looking threatening. Traore should square it Ofcourse, however couple of inches lower and it’s a great goal - typical Adama. Burnley only dangerous from mistakes from is (dendonker pass for example) Coady very good first half with two important interceptions from crosses. Should hwang have been sent off? I was on other side so couldn’t quite see.

2nd half was pretty dull. Not much to comment on it really.

In the 90 minutes with all the possession and Pope doesn’t have to make a telling save. Says it all. We appear very toothless. 12 goals in 14 emphasises that.

A lot made of our full backs / wingbacks having a lot of the ball and not being very creative. I’m not sure the main issue lies with them. A central midfielder who makes runs forward is vital and who can unlock a defence. A lot of the time towards to end we looked like we were playing 325, with the wingbacks and front 3 just stood in a line. We are very easy to sit in and by tight against, mout and dendonker (neves also when ye plays) almost play as a 2 man Pivot. A proper box to box midfielder could well change a lot of how we look.

Anyway, good to be back, shame about the game (and the numpty next to me who spent the first 20 moaning neves wasn’t playing, and the last 20 that Podence hadn’t come on). Will have to organise meeting a few of you in the London nexttime.

O, from our shit corner to them having a 1v1 with Sa, he does very well there to force the striker wide.

The boos and there weren't many imo were more out of frustration for the last 20 seconds before full time rather than the performances itself. Throw in from Kilman back to Coady, back to Kilman, ref blows up.

Still think they get a raw deal, they see a lot of the ball but rarely in situations they can do a great deal with it. It gets plonked out wide to them and they're expected to magic something up, it's like the way the team treated Traore when he had his purple patch.

Semedo had a few situations today where he got slipped down the outside and took an extra touch so lost the crossing opportunity but there's rarely anyone there to aim for anyway so it probably makes little difference. RAN must refuse to run in training or something because every pass that's ever played to him kills him dead, no-one must have any clue how fast he actually is to judge how far in front of him they can play the ball.

Too much is being expected of them at the moment. You could easily simplify their role and just ask them to wang the ball into the box as early and often as possible, like Taylor was for Burnley, but you need more bodies in the box for that to be worthwhile. Otherwise you've got to try and improve the service you give them, try and get the ball ahead of them so they can run in behind the fullback more often and not always be reliant on having to try snd carry the ball beyond them.

Same story in the middle of the attack today, Jimenez just stood in no man's land most of the game. Didn't try to run off the back or down the sides of them to look for a ball in behind, nor did he come towards the ball to offer a quick return trying to play someone else in in goal. It's like he was just hanging around waiting for a miracle ball to pick him out without him having to make any effort to get away from his markers.

The build up was really good tonight but they just aren't cute enough in the final third.

As wilf wolf has said few low key groans. That was likely more to do with we went back to Coady 5 times in the space of a minute before the whistle was blown, without getting into the final third.

Can’t comment on atmosphere as first game for me, but it wasn’t overly exuberant

Agreed.

What is our route to goal though, what are actually trying to achieve? How do we look to score?

You only have to watch Liverpool play and they make the game look so simple. They get Trent/Robertson in a position to cross and then they just hit an area and there’s always 3 players minimum in their making a run. The players know when to time their run as they know it’s coming in. Do our players know when it’s getting crossed? It gets crossed when there’s no one in their and then it doesn’t get crossed when their queing up for it. Plus the timings are all off because they always look like they’ve never played with each other before so even if we A) get players in the box B) cross it, it’s easily defended.

I don’t know what the answer is. Change of system? Better players (always helps but this isn’t a cheap squad)? Or better coaching?

My other thought is, it was clear that Burnley were playing for 0 0 pretty much as soon the second half started and despite dominating the ball we weren't causing them many problems. Bruno's options were limited, but I thought that was the time to try 442. Centre half off, Trincao or Fabio on. Another game when I felt the manager did little to try and alter it

I think that is a fair comment, but Bruno's options weren't just limited, they were virtually non existent. It's pretty obvious that he's seen enough of Fabio to make the judgement that he's simply not good enough and while he is a warm body that can take up space on the bench, Bruno would clearly rather stick with what he has than trust Fabio to contribute. And let's be honest Trincao was bloody rubbish at the weekend when he got his chance. The rest of the bench doesn't bear thinking about.
