Ukraine

I admire her resolve and wish her the best, but damn. That's some choice.
I’ve an ex bus driving mate who’s English living in Ukraine with his Belarusian wife, pair of them are willing to fight and die for Ukraine if they have to, they love their adopted country that much

When did the Czech Republic just become "Czechia"?
The Czech government officially adopted this in 2016, but it has been in casual use for almost a century.

Not to be too conspiratorial about it, but you have to wonder if he's either had covid (and it's affected his mental health), or his anxiety over the possibility of catching it has also played a part in this.

A number of people who have met with him over the last couple of years (Macron most recently and notably) have said that Putin seems a lot more antagonistic, prickly, and perhaps even irrational. While it is possible to see the logic behind what he's doing - the US is still in a weakened state, Europe is ineffectual and unable to wean itself off Russian gas, so now's as good a chance as any - it's a hell of a gamble. You don't have to be a master strategist to see that this is inevitably going to lead to everyone on the Russian border clamouring for NATO membership, and a likely boost to defence investment by countries like Germany, Poland, Czechia, Finland, etc. And as much as Russia has an opening now, it absolutely could not handle going toe-to-toe with all of NATO if a land war did break out somewhere like the Baltics.

It feels like an extremely effective way to fuck yourself over in the longer term, for the sake of shorter term territorial expansion.
Indeed. Macron said he is a completely different animal to the one he met 3 years ago. He has apparently become increasingly isolated during Covid and one can wonder what this may have done to him psychologically. Could even be his age, whilst he is not ancient, he is also no spring chicken and maybe he has the onset of dementia. Whatever, it is worrying as he certainly came across as rather unhinged in his address the other night, not something I have particularly thought of him before

Abramovich is still a Russian citizen, right? Could he (and Chelsea) be affected by current events?

He is Russian/Israeli/Portuguese now, and so an EU citizen.

In the 10 minutes since asking the question, two separate headlines about him have popped up on my MSN newsfeed (someone is either reading this post or probing my mind). One story says a Labour MP wants to confiscate all his money, the other says he is not allowed to live in the UK.

If Abramovich is still close to Putin - and I assume that no Russian can become that wealthy without Putin's blessing - then he must be at risk of sanctions etc.

Usmanov is the one to look out for too. No way that Everton stadium is getting built now.

You could've frozen his assets in UK banks, but fatso has given him and his like plenty of warning to get it out. He's flown from Monaco to Moscow today presumably summoned

Could nick his yacht I suppose. It's either in Monaco or St Bart's which is BVI. It's about £350m worth I believe.

Big battle around Chernobyl by the look of it. Not exactly number one on my list of places to have a military scrap.

They’d better not trash the place, I want to revisit again one day

I read something earlier that its in Vilamoura. As is Bully. Always thought there was something about Bully!

It normally winters in St Bart's as he uses it to ferry guests like Putin and co from the airport to his private bit. Think it is called Eclipse. It's fucking massive. Usmanov's is even bigger I think. Only bigger yachts belong to middle east sports washers.

Read somewhere ages ago super yachts come in around the million quid a METRE to build, and around half that to fill the tank, then there’s full time crew (around 20) wages as well, serious money

Area around Chernobyl captured, currently under Russian control, all decommissioning workers captured and now held hostage ( or kept indoors for their own safety against Ukraine troops, according to RT)

Really uncomfortable viewing on sky news just then. Two presenters in Kiev, explosions, gun fire and sirens going off, and you could hear the tension in their voices as they were building up to basically saying 'erm k think it's time for me to follow the people going to the bomb shelters now, speak to you later'
