I suspect Trump just wants to get out and forget about Iran forever so is accepting the advice that throwing more fuel on the fire won’t enable that. He can bluster all he likes about winning but his advisers and the rest of the world know he’s just created an enormous mess and he will just want it to go away. A ”no ships or all ships” approach is a better option than more bombs.

I know it's hit the papers today that Trump doesnt like the Pope, but I was listening to the Bulwark the other day and it might have been Anne Appelbaum who said that the Pope has more or less been threatened by the US;

Allegations claim that in January 2026, Pentagon officials warned Pope Leo XIV and the Vatican that the United States has the military power to "do whatever it wants" and that the Church "had better take its side" following the Pope's criticism of the Trump administration's foreign policy.

These reports, primarily sourced from The Free Press, state that Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby summoned Cardinal Christophe Pierre to a closed-door meeting where an official allegedly invoked the Avignon Papacy as a historical example of secular powers forcing the papacy into submission.

However, the Pentagon and White House have officially denied these allegations, characterizing the meeting as a "respectful and reasonable discussion" and dismissing the reports as "highly exaggerated and distorted." China will be silent. Never interrupt your enemy (Trump) when he is making a mistake. From a position of clear non-aggression, China can then act up the aggrieved party and threaten hell and high water to the orange buffoon. Or they can arm their ships going through the strait. Or escort them with the Chinese navy.
