Some in the media like to argue that Republicans can no longer win elections: - a candidate has to tie him/herself to trump in order to win a primary but in doing so will alienate enough moderates and independents to lose to the Democrat.
That is a very dangerous idea. More people voted for trump in 2020 than for any presidential candidate ever (except for Biden). These voters will be very highly motivated to vote for trump sympathisers in future elections. Ds will be less motivated to vote if trump himself is not the R candidate.
The Republican party is in a transitional phase and moving away from some of its traditional values, but its new populism will bring it more votes.

Apologies, that "slightly" was heavily sarcastic. It is frightening how quickly that all the laughing and sneering about the cultism that happened over the pond has now somewhat dissipated, and we're stuck with what we have for much longer than a four year cycle.
