Tottenham 2-0 Wolves: Verdict, 16/05/21

A full pre season and we should be back to our usual (lack of) injury levels tbh. That alone is probably worth a few points!

Found a free-to-air terrestrial tv station showing the game in San Antonio. Telemundo broadcasts in Spanish and it was probably for the best that I understood very little of their commentary. Strong Mexican connection, so no surprise that they mentioned Raúl more than any other player in the build up, and also had a 2 minute interview with Adama.
Then it took a while to understand how they pronounced the players names. We had Roman Zize, Jo-wow Moutinho, Gibbs-Wide, Vicheenha, and Hoever became Jewish - Hoi vey. Wolves was very much with an 'o', not Wulves. Spurs were always the Lilywhites and Son was called Sonny.

Very much an end of season game, deserved to lose, but we could easily have scored 2 or 3 goals.

To this point, if I hear another commentator pronounce Raul's name "Hee-men-eth", I'll lose it.

Was talking with a Mexican national today. He was complaining about people saying Himinez or HEmenez. He also told me that Rauls nickname in Mexico is El Pollo. Supposedly a compliment because Raul used to play for Club America - known as The Eagles.
Calling someone 'chicken' doesn't sound quite so complimentary in English.

It's for the rhyme, isn't it? IIRC he went by Alonso or Alo when he was at Club America, so the name becomes El Pollo Alo.

Shooting from the hip here, so take it with a grain of salt.

Thats exactly how its pronounced in Spanish.

A J is pronouced almost like flem in your throat
A z is pronounced th.
An i is not pronounced as Eye, but as a shortened e.
Spanish is Phonetic.

Jimenez is Really pronounced as
Heemeneth but the H is whats called Hard when learning the language.

Lack of proper pronunciation of foreign Names pisses me off, it's not fucking difficult to check the pronunciaton

Ceballos should be pronounced thebayos

Sorry mate, Mexican Spanish doesn't follow the same rules.

EDIT: Needlessly aggressive.

Was in Prague for a stag when we signed him and he played for Mexico against Germany, some lovely Mexicans in the bar taught me how to say it. Really not that difficult. Pretty much if you say it how it reads in English you ain’t far off (obviously not a J like Jim though).

Better to just say it the English way and get it wrong than be clever and get it wrong - classic Sam Matterface

I don't really know why the zee/zed getting pronounced as a "th" bugs me so much, tbf.

Was a weird game to watch back. We weren't terrible for long periods of the game but then we never really had any control at any point either. 40-60 minutes we were very open and they created their chances. A combination of players who just need the season to end (Saiss, Patricio, Donck) with inexperienced ones learning some important lessons (Hoever, Vitinha, MGW, Silva).

Only two more to go and then we can all start wetting ourselves that we haven't signed anyone yet and that the money is gone.
