Top 5 Solo Artists?

not thinking this one too much so
pj harvey
bowie
gene clark
nick drake
mark linkous (sparklehorse)

not sure what constitutes 'solo' artist - presume they should be able to write the tunes? - which a vocalist/lyricist won't have done

Kate Bush is definitely on my list (no doubt to the surprise of many). Seeing her live was amazing and fulfilled a bucket list moment for Squeeze so I got a lot of brownie points then.

Females:
1: Bush,
2: Nicks,
Dusty Springfield etc and US 60'-70's soul singers. But they were just good vocalists, didn't write their own stuff, so not sure if they can really be classed as 'solo' artists personally.

You’ve missed
Kd Lang,
P j Harvey,
Bjork,
Sheryl crow,
Emiliana Torrini,
Hafdis Huld,
Joni Mitchell,
Carole king,
Nina Simone,
Sandy Denny,
Dolly Parton,

Off the list of female singer songwriters

Not sure why you need to write stuff to be a solo artist. Like Elvis never wrote a line in his life.
Yeah, I understand that but if not it just opens it up to too many in my mind. As Keef says above. I like several if them, I could list more, such as Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Sandie Shaw blah, blah..

Female solos

Nina Simone
Ella Fitzgerald

I dunno, just list who you like rather than making up your own weird rules? Maverick stuff I know.

For female artists, I would like to add Annie Lennox.
