I know that comparisons between the 70's and now are unrealistic, but please indulge me:
Back in the early 70's the teams with the big name players were Arsenal, Leeds United, Liverpool, Everton and the two Manchester clubs, both of whom fell from grace in the mid 70's. Wolves at that time could not attract the kind of players that the big guns could, but first Ronnie Allen and then Bill McGarry went down a different route. We brought in a leader, Mike Bailey, whose fitness was not certain following his broken leg while playing for Charlton Athletic. They also brought through younger players like Parkes, McAlle, Richards and Taylor. A gamble was taken when we signed Waggy, Parkin and Hibbitt, as no -one knew if they would be good enough for Division One. An even bigger gamble was taken on The Doog and Frank Munro, who both had reputations as being disruptive. But these players were brought in and were welded into a team, and they became a very good team, finishing 4th in division one, winning two league cup finals, one European final, and two FA Cup semi finals. A record to be proud of.
Now I am not saying that is/was the Wolves way, but with supposedly lesser players we more than held our own against the best. Who can ever forget the champions, Arsenal, being slaughtered at Molineux. I fully accept that with the money in the game now, it would be extremely difficult for Wolves to break into the top six, but who knows what could happen if we reach the Premier League again, consolidate and move forward. There is no reason why we could not emulate the likes of Stoke City, although it would be extremely difficult to do so. I think though it would be fair to say that if we got promoted, survival would be our biggest ambition to begin with.
