The Velotard Thread.

If you can do one,you can do the other,it's pretty much similar, but like you say without the tools it's tricky, and the shop might as well do the little jobs alongside the big ones,I have to do my own bike,we haven't got a local bike shop, closest is 20 miles away in Aberystwyth

Thrashed it, obviously!

Seems like general wear and tear, but it's all happened in one go.

I have probably contributed to its downfall myself through some carelessness. Not taking the wheels off to wash it has probably lead to the bearings wearing out quicker. Not degreasing and cleaning the cassette often enough (I left it dirty after the Velo in Septmeber until a fortnight ago). Over vigorously oiling the chain has probably lead to the pads being contaminated from the over spray. Not drying the bike thoroughly enough after washing etc.

My project next year is to get a proper shed to store it in as it's in a bike tent in my garden at the moment so probably suffers from moisture ingress in there too.

Good grief, I think I physically twitched upon reading that you'd left your bike uncleaned for four months. Heathen. And what were you doing with the lubricant? Sloshing it on with a fucking ladle? You should get some bike spray to help dry the bike off after washing although having it live outside as you've described isn't going to help, I'll give you that.

I spend about £75 a year on servicing, thereon its consumables such as tyres and inner tubes. The only major expense I've had since buying the bike is the Ultegra groupset.

I've got some of that bike spray, but I think that's what fucked up the brake pads last time....?

Found this tasty little site that plugs into your Strava and tells you the weather conditions of your ride.

Oh the struggle this morning....

If Wombat is to be believed!

Couldn't say, obviously. I never go near the brake pads when using the bike spray. Pro tip: Just use a clean cloth to rub around the braking surfaces of each wheel, it'll be surprising how much grime you'll get off. Other than that, assuming no rubbing on the rims, have you been feathering the brakes and wearing them out that way?

I've got disc brakes, so a bit more susceptible, so I've read. It's oil contamination as opposed to them being worn out as I've only had these ones in for 6 months. It's not a huge job to take the wheels out and cover the pads before spraying, I suppose.

Ah, I see. In which case I revert to chastising you for leaving your bike filthier than Paddy's mouth after an incendiary curry.

Fair enough :/

Nothing too challenging there by the looks of it. Maybe the climb around 50 miles, and then it gets lumpy for ~4 miles shortly after; save your legs for the incline just before the finish so you can drop a few people and ego-wank down to the finish.

I've pre-registered for Velo South, same lot as did your one, Machin, 100 miles on closed roads starting and finishing at Goodwood. Would be a nice challenge but given that I'm in France for a fortnight immediately prior and will thus still be sweating rosé, it might not be too much of an enjoyable experience.

Yeah, bit gutted about that as it means there's no Velo Birmingham this year. Apparently CSM (the company who run the registration and logistics of the event) said they didn't want to organise another Birmingham one. Too much hassle from going through so many different counties, or some such shite. Doesn't help when the attitude displayed by the E&S was one that seemed to linger.

They've said there'll be another Brum one in 2019, but I'm not holding my breath.

I bet some of the roads down that way are stunning. Unfortunately, just too far from home for me to consider, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's knocking on £100 to apply.

That's a shame, and I did read that there was a last-minute route change due to persistent grumbling?

Velo South should be good but I expect it to be a hard route: straight out of Goodwood you're going uphill whichever way you go, so I expect some fearsome climbing and descending. I don't know if pre-registering gets any form of discount TBH. I'd like to do it but I don't know if two weeks off the bike immediately prior (albeit with a few runs and swimming to keep things ticking over) is going to help. Plus it'd be an excuse to buy some lairy Stolen Goat gear.

I can see why they wouldn't when some of the local farmers threw tacks on the road and then some residents of some of the villages the ride went through put oil on the road the morning of the ride. All because they didn't like their roads closed for a day.

Wankhammers who probably voted Brexit.

And ultimately those said wankhammers have won and their actions vindicated, as the Velo isn't returning and their precious roads will remain open forever more.

Unless anyone really needs them don't get and fit mudguards, an absolute pain in the backside to fit.
