The Velotard Thread.

Very cool watching the commonwealth mountain biking on trails that I’ve run on - wish I’d got tickets now.

Bit odd they they don’t have massive tyres and huge suspension as I see most weekends on there though ;)

Will have to cycle into the centre of brum Fri, and may need to do so regularly from late September onwards. Guess I will be able to check out all the infrastructure!

Amazing that the mountain biking course is staying for public use with properly qualified trainers there for helping the public utilise the course properly. Now THAT is a games legacy. If you can hire a bike up there as well I would be all over trying to have a go before I head south of the equator.

Couldn't quite make heads nor tails of the MTB course from the little bit I watched, was only one bit that I thought I recognized but looked like they were doing it backwards compared to it's usual public use. If that's the case imagine it's pretty disruptive to the normal trails and will continue to be so if it's staying in place a while.

Have considered getting some MTB tutelage in the past though, I tackle almost any obstacle with the grace of a fridge plummetting down a flight of stairs, so would be interested to have a look at that if I found myself down that way before it's gone. Saying that I've never managed to wipe out quite as badly as that Scottish did on a mundane bit of grass, or snapped my derailleur clean off either.

Just watched the women’s time trial coming down Gospel End Road. Seriously quick. Now off to see the men in Sedgley.

Thomas crashes on the mens time trial. Gold hopes over you would imagine.

Managed to be second at the first split time although half a minute behind.

The answers in the first sentence of the second paragraph, cycle lanes removed, people not feeling safe

So the repair v new bike dilemma.

Had one of those moments a couple of months back when happened to see a particular bike in a local shop window and just went weak at the knees. Heavily discounted too and sooo tempted but in the end with a half decent bike already on the go just couldn’t quite justify it.

Bike in question Merida one twenty 400 (ok, so taste is subjective, but whatever, this bike does it for me):

Thing is, the current bike now has some issues, the chain snapped recently buggering the rear hanger and derailleur, the full drive train needs replacing and there’s the start of a bit of play in the bottom bracket too. Realistically around £300 to get sorted which makes the new one wink even more.

Was in the bike shop today and there’s just one left of the 2022 heavily discounted model. Thing that’s troubling me though is the potential ongoing servicing and maintenance costs. I mean, you buy a new car reluctantly because the old one is knackered but confident after the initial outlay the running costs will be lower, but with bikes the components don’t seem to last that long and the replacement parts can astronomical. I could spend £300 on the trusty steed and be good for a year or so, but would be mightily pissed off if spending a considerable sum of money on a new one and then endIng up with an even bigger bill for servicing and replacement parts in a similar amount of time. It does appear the more you spend the higher the ongoing costs are likely to be which is the opposite of what is supposed to happen.

So more than a bit torn and will need to make a decision quickly. There’s probably arguments both ways and it’ll probably come down to urge v common sense, but being right on the fence at 50-50 any opinions and thoughts will be both appreciated and influential.

Depends how much you ride it and how hard you ride it.
That Merida might need a rear shock service,
Need all the suspension pivots servicing/replacing
Brake bleed,
Cassette and two? Chains annually.

If it’s only coming out on sunny days it’ll need next to nothing bar a check over.
I know a good mechanic who might be a bit cheaper in Guildford which is nowhere near you I’m guessing if you’re in Epsom.

I’d repair the old one myself, but that’s because I’m a hippie who only buys new stuff when it’s a necessity and if the old bikes still doing the job.

You want the new one though, would it be cheaper on a cycle to work scheme? If your work offers that, downside to that is monthly out your wages

I ride two or three times a week off-road with a couple of clubs. Normally 20-25 miles per ride so say 40-75 miles a week total. Always off road on everything from straightforward tracks to some pretty cool climbs and trails. Very muddy this time of year and the bikes do have a fairly tough time.

The sensible thing would be to repair the other one but very occasionally you can let your heart rule your head. I’m too analytical to follow my own advice though and would be traumatised by a massive servicing/repair bill hence the dilemma.

Would be a whole lot easier not to think too much sometimes.

Edit: yes, in Epsom, Guilford is only half an hour up the road.

The cycologist.co.uk is my mate if you want to search him, I’ve just looked, he’s more godalming which is further away, but says he does collections for a fee.
Dunno if that helps you at all

Thanks for that.

I think it’s just going to require a psychological shift to accepting the ongoing costs and all will be good. You don’t get anything for nothing and it’s an investment in your health after all.

The missus pointed out in the long run it‘s going to be cheaper than her gym membership anyway, and besides, part of the reason she goes is because most days she gets to ogle Peter Andre in tight fitting shorts and a vest top so if you just like the look of the bloody bike stop thinking and treat yourself.

Seems as good a reason as any to be honest.

and here's me trying to drag out the date of replacing my chain!
although that is mainly cos they pay us early in december, meaning we have 6+ weeks between paydays...

I remember those days well and they don’t seem that long ago.

Funnily enough did a ride this morning and there were tales of some eye-watering servicing and repair bills. You think it’s all getting a bit out of hand and morally questionable especially at the moment with the cost of living crisis etc.

But, determined to make 2023 the year to stop sucking the enjoyment out of stuff by over thinking, so am wandering down this afternoon and fuck it, if the thing is still there I’m going in.
