The Velotard Thread.

Was good to get back out on the good bike in the sunshine over the weekend.

Bonus points if anyone can tell me where that is....

That’s a picture that tempts you to get the bike out again. Used to knock out two or three 50 mile events, maybe a 100k each year on the road bike culminating in the 100 mile Surrey Hills a few years back. Always felt a bit vulnerable on the road bike riding alone so ended up just doing large events which felt safer, but they became increasingly difficult if not putting in the training miles and so the bike rarely sees the light of day.

Found myself preferring to get the mountain bike out and hit the trails, which always felt safer and closer to nature. That’s probably still the preference but thanks for posting that image…. and with the weather warming up there’s no excuses now.

Same, I don't love riding with the cars in London, already had one van plough into the side of me this year, but will get to get up to Richmond Park a few times this summer. 2020 was so good when they closed it off to cars and visitors, and even school traffic, such a shame we don't have those open spaces in the same way anymore. I was in Thailand over Christmas and even they have managed to create lots of safe cycling areas free of cars

Yeah, it's a huge problem. So many more people would be out using active and alternative modes of transport if there was a safe infrastructure to use or simply fewer cars on the roads.

Got a bike fit and new pedals fitted today, bike feels 100x better.

Here:

Gary was fantastic.

Edit - just went for the standard fit, not the expensive Retul

That’s good to read. He’s a top guy, and a hec of a cyclist.

What pedals?

Some SPD EH-500s, nothing too special but i wanted the ability to still wear flat shoes when i commute.

Inspired by some of the posts on here got back out on the steed today and really, really enjoyed it. Amazing how good you feel afterwards and quite cross with myself for not getting off my arse sooner. Things had been pretty hectic lately and hated starting to feel a bit lardy, but there’s only one person that can do anything about that. Blew some right old cobwebs away and enjoyed every second.

Very fortunate to have some amazing trials on the doorstep so no excuses now. You forget how good a bit of exercise makes you feel both physically and mentally. Bloody loved that.

Got called a cunt yesterday for not riding 2m away from a merc GL. Not entirely sure how I was supposed to do that given I was between his penis enhancer and the curb 🤷🏻‍♂️

I'm really tempted to cycle to work once I move down to London later this year as we have really good facilities in our office building for parking/storage as well as dedicated showers and changing etc.

The only thing that does put me off is the traffic and riding on the roads around London - maybe I'll just have to bite the bullet and give it a try.

Also tempted to get a VanMoof S3 which will make the ride much more enjoyable providing I've got good storage at each end.

You can get the e-bike equivalent of Boris Bikes in London now - could give it a try when you're down next. Maybe scope out a route which avoids busy roads too.

I hired a Brompton when I was down in London on Friday. Went from Euston out the The Excel. I was pleasently surprised at how easy it was. Absolutely loads of proper dedicated infrastructure as well as loads of parks with cycle paths, it wasn't anywhere near as busy as I feared and I had absolutely zero grief from other road road users. Once you've got your knowledge of possible routes and which roads are best etc I'd give it a go.

On the way back I used the Greenways and Canal Paths pretty much the whole way back to King's Cross. Slow, but completely traffic free.

Saw quite a few of these knocking around. Zoomos, I think they were called. London is so flat though, that unless you were doing 20+ miles a day I would have thought an ebike might be overkill. A nice lightweight hybrid commuter would be the way to go, imo.
