The things that I really, really like thread...

Amazing what you can make out of a block of wood, different sized nails, a hammer, some paint, and an imagination.

What was it then?

In the summer, my daughter and I built a hammock stand out of some old wood we had lying around. Bloody awesome it is.

The Cosmos DVD arrived today, 10 hours of interesting viewing :)

Forget that, watched an hour, cant get me head round it, gonna watch Hercules instead

I like watching programmes about space/time/whatever,I don't understand much either but it's still interesting...

The closest star outside our system is about 4.22 lightyears away,Voyager 1 which is travelling out there at massive speed (17 km/sec) would ONLY take 74000 years to reach there if it was going in that direction! :)

Now,that star system is also moving towards US at blinding speeds (22 km/sec) but in 27 000 years time it will weer off to somewhere.

Another fun thing, the Earth is about a 26000 miles round trip, taking a passenger jet around 45 hours...
one of the biggest stars VY Canis Majoris would take the same airplane 1100 YEARS for one round trip.

I can't even imagine that, the plane would have to start around year 900-1000 with vikings looking on! ;)

And how come we don't feel or notice the earth spinning pretty fast and travelling around the sun pretty fast?? WHY??

I know gravity keeps us on the ground but how can we not feel anything?

See, all the above facts are exactly what me head can't comprehend and take in, and if me head ay following then I start asking lots of questions which then I think gets on the persons nerves who I am watching it with. So I go off instead to make a cup of tea, or pluck me eyebrows or shave me legs. I might try to persevere with it as its a " 13 part adventure that will transport you across the universe of space and time ". And if I doe understand it then I can just look at the pictures cos they were indeed spectacular. :)

Me microwave potato bag for doing jacket tatas.

It's because we are in what's called the same "inertial frame of reference" as the Earth, Sun, etc. It's all one system moving at the same time.

Much like when you sit on a train going at a constant 90mph, if it weren't for the occasional bump or looking out the window, you wouldn't know you were doing that speed. A constant speed is the same as going at zero speed. You can't distinguish the two unless some other force acts upon you.

I liked it better when I didn't have this info. :)
