The Road to World Cup 2026 and UEFA Nations League

Henderson has always been a 6/10 at best on the ball but what he always offered at his peak was relentless, unglamorous leg work.

But he's 36 by the time the World Cup comes around. So how does that work.
It doesn’t!

Wharton is a huge miss. We don't really have another player like him. Henderson will be 36 at the world cup.

On the other hand...

A consistent failure of all England managers over my time as a fan has been the selection of talent at the expense of building a team. I'm going to wait and see before judging too harshly.

Also :
“We should be proud enough of the culture and style of English football and the English league to implement this style,” he said. “We have to increase the intensity in our games, the rhythm."

I've been waiting my whole life for an England manager to do this.

MGW replaces the injured Cole Palmer

Southgate built a team.

2018 he did. And he binned off Rooney which was great. Later on though he fell into the trap of picking players who weren't doing it based on reputation. He should've dropped Kane and Bellingham in the last tournament for example.

That’s unfair. 2018, 2021 and 2022 it was clear he had a plan and stuck to it (in some ways our downfall when it mattered I guess).

2018 - squeezed a lot out of a poor squad

2021 - lost on pens in final

2022 - I actually thought we played well in this tournament just unlucky to lose to France in the quarters

I don’t want to speak about last summer, even though we got to the final that was a grim watch

Agreed on 2022. We played well most of the time. Kane scores that pen and who knows.

Look Doherty has forged a very good career for himself with the limitations he has. Spending 7-8 seasons as top division player is no mean feat. Top level football is brutal and unimaginably hard so he deserves some credit for that.
Top add he should be eternally grateful to Mick for signing him and Nuno for putting him in a position that allowed him to flourish for 3 seasons.
