The R.I.P. Thread

We must be one of the few countries to pick three different keepers at the World Cup who were either 40 or very close to it. Shilton 1990, Seaman 2002 (although we didn't have a better choice at the time in reality), James 2010.

Yes I get that. Seaman 75 caps Woods 43 caps Robinson 41 caps Martyn 23 caps, Flowers 11 caps basically England's post Shilton keepers. I just don't see how that makes Woods awful when he betters all but seaman in that group in terms of caps.

Now if you start on Scott Carson it's a different story. Ben Foster is a little unlucky in terms of ability but he's a cunt so deserves bugger all.
I don't follow you, I'm saying Woods may or may not have been unlucky not to play more in the 80s (I wouldn't know) but he shouldn't have been playing at all in the 90s, he wasn't anything like good enough and we definitely had better. He shouldn't have 43 caps, in any case that isn't a mark of anything, Glen Johnson has 50+ caps.

In 1991 (just to pick a sample year) Tim Flowers was a far better keeper than Chris Woods, as was Nigel Martyn, whoever ended up with more caps.

Who would've thought a thread could take a downward turn from announcing deaths.

Genuinely claimed that Freddie Mercury wrote Killer Queen about him. On the Kenny Sr from Phoenix Nights levels of bullshit there.

Probably needs a new thread re English goalkeepers.

For generations we had the best group of keepers of any country, but in the last 25 years it‘s all turned to sh!t.

These conversations tend to go with generations, but the goat for me. Dragged a bunch of cloggers to a World Cup win and nearly did it again 4 years later

He didn't do owt in Italia 90 bar the pass vs Brazil, he was mince.

RIP Maradona a great player and probably one of the last rock n roll footballers (all media trained prefects these days aren't they, boring as fuck!)

Best player I've ever seen and he used to go clubbing half the week! What he did at Napoli was like one player turning Crystal Palace into league champions. The world has just got more boring.

There's nothing to celebrate about his off field lifestyle, it wasn't funny or interesting, he was just a prick.

I missed his best years as it was slightly before my time, although in fact pretty much anyone in the UK who bangs on about his days at Napoli is being disingenuous as they can't have seen very much of it at the time. 86 World Cup, fair enough and he clearly did dominate that tournament. No doubt he was a very special footballer at his peak but I can't say I saw it.

Oh man that is sad news.

I was too young to appreciate him at this peak but I never tire of seeing footage of him playing. A joy to watch.

Probably the most talented player I’ve ever seen even if he didn’t always make the most of that talent.
