The OFFICIAL Womens World Cup Thread

England's performance was poor especially the first half of the game.
Lacked on ideas and were very dull to watch, if the men had put s performance like that in at a World Cup they'd be slaughtered by the press.
I think England will scrape through group and go out early to a team of decent quality, then people will say a good effort which his complete bollocks to me.

The coach is really looking forward to seeing the GPS data as he thinks they have set a record...Football's answer to Peter Moores

Precisely. A shit coach in charge of an average set of players. And some of the players on the BBC moaning that they don't have parity with the male game.

On the other hand France, Germany, USA and Norway have all looked good both technically and physically.

Oh and the co-commentators and pundits have been nothing short of abysmal, making Wright and Townsend sound like Seedorf and Leonardo

Can't do with it to be honest, it's a personal choice and i know it sounds terribly sexist but i find it like Womens tennis, if you watched a game involving Jokavich and Murray for instance or the Champions League final, watching the female version's is pointless.

I think Jonathan Pearce has done an admiral job. He seems to be fairly knowledgeable on womans football and appears to have done his research well. The co-commentators (i.e. the women) I'll give you though. They appear to be there to keep the quota up - they very much come across like they're there for a chat, rather then reporting on a game of football.

I did laugh yesterday at Danny Mills in the studio after the England/France game - basically doing everything in his power to ensure he didn't offend any ladies :icon_lol:

Yep - bang on. I found the difference in quality between the England v France game and the Spain v Costa Rica match that followed to be considerable. The latter had far better technique, control, team work etc - I would say womens football has come a long way since the Olympics and is often now perfectly watchable. I didn't think the England performance was though - absolutely nothing offered upfront whatsoever, the French centre halves had the easiest game of their lives and were totally dominant. It was obvious we weren't going to get through them easily after the first five minutes but we never tried anything different.

One thing that hasn't changed is the bizarre attitude some of the pundits and media have towards our womens national team - Jinky picked up on this but it's like a lot of them are scared of offending them!

I watched Spain v Costa Rica on Eurosport - it was MILES better than the BBC. It was in HD for a start - not via the shitty red button. The commentary was a vast improvement as well. I'd recommend switching over to Eurosport if you intend on watching any more of the tournament.

Bit harsh on England here, the reality is many of the countries ahead of England have been running professional leagues for a lot longer. Having girls working on individual technical quality within Academies from their early teens. Female football within the UK is still very much in its infancy so expectancy should be relatively low.

I thought England were set up very much like a Mick McCarthy team. We worked very hard off the ball and put a real shift in, but ultimately, lacked real quality.

I really didn't see much of an improvement from Euro 2013 under Hope Powell. Granted, they 'grafted' which they didn't really last time we played France in a major tournament but there wasn't really much progress on show IMO. I'd be lying if I said I knew much about the setup of the womens league (particularly overseas) so pardon my ignorance there but England are ranked 6th in the world - surely we should expect something better than the quality served up last night? I think we only managed 3 shots - and I think only 1 of those was on target.

Granted we were playing a very good side so maybe the next 2 games will see a better outcome and performance?

As has been said it seems a lot of ex players and pundits seem to have a different approach to judging a female game from a males game in fear of causing offence.
Sorry that was sub standard crap yesterday that offered no positives and to say we were well organised doesn't wash with many, the goal conceded was crap defending and we were far from well organised going forward.
If they want the hype that a World Cup brings expect the heavy criticism that shoddy performance brings.

Agree 100%
The commentary is 10 times the effort that the bbc are giving us.
The red button malarkey is laughable. At half time during the Sweden Nigeria match we were shown the same goals at least 20 times and some technician fella was shouting in a geordie accent "I need the right channels...gods sake...the right channels"....it was laughably amateurish.

Also the studio for the live matches (i presume somewhere in Salford) is like something from 70's Match of the day studio...looks like a last minute rush job which goes hand in hand with the Pannini sticker book where it seems five of the USA team have their heads stuck on Hope Solo's body.

Also that French defender is quite clearly a fucking giraffe masquerading as a women.

Big game for Norges kvinner. The Germans will be a hell of a test.

Norway lead after five minutes...Poor keeping

Germany is in the red. But yes, Hjelmwhatever has been really shaky so far this Cup.

Oh yeah! Ha ha... Just assumed it was Norway in red and Germany in white! Stupid change strips...

Didn't realize Rønning was injured and not playing. Throwaway game, then.

Yeah, if I wasn't already familiar with Norway's kits I would have assumed the same.

It didn't help that it's just on in the background and when I looked up and saw the goal Eurosport took the clock and scoreboard off the top left corner for a few minutes

Germany are just a different class thus far. The ball just goes right to them. Can't see anyone being close to them if this keeps up.

The difference between Germany and England is vast. Some good stuff from Germany so far.
