The Official Euro 2016 Megathread

In Paris, no less - although I've felt England and France both look very similar so far, lots of quality in places but shaky at the back under real pressure and unable to turn chances into goals.

Thought it was a bad decision keeping Vardy on tonight; against a team that's sitting so deep, without space to run into behind, he's kind of redundant. Sturridge is much more the kind of player to create a chance in a crowded penalty area, and thought he was playing well until replaced.

Bang on. Really couldn't understand why he took Sturridge off when Vardy had contributed the square root of fuck all in the second half and wasn't going to for the rest of it either.

Cannot blame Slovakia at all. Shows up the weakness of a 24 team format though (as predicted pre-tournament), under normal circumstances they'd have had to try to win the game. UEFA's fault rather than Slovakia's.

Yep so far this tournament reminds you of cricket and rugby world cups where the first two weeks are spent playing matches to get rid of a few minor nations whilst everyone knows all the big hitters are going to make it without too much sweat, hopefully will pick up at the knockout stages.

When teams sit deep and put up two banks of 5 it negates Vardy as a threat playing on the shoulder of the last man and running into space.
The real lack of width came to bite Roy last night we couldn't stretch them and expose any gaps.

that's an issue. Vardy's probably our best finisher. he's been on the pitch over two hours and in that time he's scored from a defensive header and the best chance made for him was a ball hit from deep. from the possession we've had in the opposition half we've made sweet fa for him and he's then simply taking up space in the box that can't be exploited by anyone else. you'd think we'd have some sort of plan when this happens such as Vardy moving out of the space and a midfield runner heading in. to be fair to Vardy he did try to do that a bit by moving out wide in the first half but I don't think anyone else was getting sufficiently forward. i'm not blaming Vardy by the way, it's just tactical play and game management which we don't seem that good at.

obviously when we have less of the ball and there's space at the back he may become much more effective. i imagine he's as frustrated as us given how much a spectator he was.

Changes didn't make a difference, Vardy 1 on 1, Lallana effort at he keeper, Clyne shot saved by the keepers shoulder, Alli shot cleared off the line and Sturridge missing the ball from Dier's chip. All very good chances and not half chances either, we take 1 or 2 of them and everyone is saying well done Roy, great changes. Let down by the finishing again tonight much like the Russia game.

Totally agree - I don't blame Hodgson at all for last night. Our finishing has been the weakest part of our tournament so far. I actually think we've played quite well overall, as frustrating as last night was, we weren't terrible. I notice social media has gone into meltdown overnight saying how shit we are and how we'll lose the next game. I don't understand the negativity. Just get them working on the finishing and we'll be fine! I've no problems at all with the overall performances. We've deserved 9 points from the group games. Poor finishing has cost us 4 of them.

In full agreement with this. Writers (and I'm typing about you McNumpty) who were slating Roy for shoehorning Rooney into the team in a midfield berth are now slating Roy for giving him an hour off.

What has shocked me this morning is that we now have to beat France and Italy to reach the final whereas if we would have finished top we would have had a route to the final where we would never have to play a decent team. I must have missed Spain and Germany getting knocked out of the tournament.

Now the dust has settled, here are a few of my thoughts -

Firstly, it's embarrassing that we haven't won that group. Wales, Slovakia & Russia are all teams we should be winning against and we've managed to draw against two of them, hit an injury time winner against another and ultimately, ended up finishing second. We were beating teams like that in qualification for fun - but if you can't do it in the tournament itself, it'll all count for nothing.

A lot has been said about the attack/defend mentality of the 'smaller' nations. But we knew full well this was going to be the way these teams set up; therefore, we should have been clever enough to work out a way of playing against these sides before the tournament started. It's alright having lots of the ball, but it's difficult to view that as an achievement when you're up against countries that are happy for you to have it (I think Bilic raised a similar point after the game last night). We don't have a player who can pick out that killer pass and break sides down. No one can turn around and say we are the only nation to come up against sides that are difficult to break down - the difference is the likes of Spain, Italy, Germany always find a way to win - they always find that killer pass and more importantly, have a player on the end of that pass who can stick the ball in the back of the net. Before the tournament Kane was our go to guy but he has looked WAY off the pace.

It's hard to have a go at Jamie Vardy. He can't help the fact that 90% of the time he had 8 Slovakian defenders on the edge of their own box marking him for the majority of last nights game. It doesn't suit his style of play to come up against such a negative side, but his performance last night wasn't helped by our midfield seemingly unable to play to his strengths. With Leicester every time Mahrez has the ball, he's looking to put it in to Vardy on the spin. The one time we did play it over the top to Vardy and put him in one on one with their keeper he nearly scored - hats off to the keeper for a good save. Which brings me on to our midfield who were far too ponderous and slow in possession last night. Hopefully we won't see Henderson or Wilshere again for a while. There's an argument that someone like Barkley could have done a better job in there but he seems totally out of favour. Sturridge for me is an absolute luxury player. It's either all or nothing with him. Last night I felt he just slowed the play down too much and tried to shoot from silly positions. Maybe it's the modern balls, but none of our players can seem to keep a ball down?

And finally, the defence. It seems obvious to me that as soon as we are properly tested at the back, we will leak goals. I don't trust Cahill or Smalling at all. Neither look comfortable on the ball (despite ITV building Smalling up as some sort of ball playing world class centre back before the game) - and whilst I don't dispute they will throw themselves in front of shots and do the blood & guts side of the game with no questions asked, I just don't think they're good enough to keep out the very best teams in this tournament. We'll be a totally different side again when Walker & Rose come back in to the starting 11, but neither of those are overly defensive minded either. As I said earlier in the thread, Bertrand is a good premier league full back but last night proved he is not an international defender. Far too negative in possession (passed backwards nearly every time he had the ball) - and was even questionable defensively on the very rare occasions that he actually had to defend - and that's supposed to be his main attribute.

I'm painting a very negative picture - it's not THAT bad. And we really should have enough to beat whoever we come up against in the next round (even Portugal who are struggling like us) but there's definitely lots to work on.

I never read McNumpty's blogs. It's just clickbait nonsense.

I think the most frustrating thing for me is that we had a full day's drinking planned on Saturday which would incorporate England. It won't be the same now. Can't go too mad on Monday night as it's a school night!!

Though I am looking forward to watching Wales and wanting them to win which I haven't been able to do yet.

Embarrassing? Really? Nonsense.

We played well in all 3 games, we DID have that killer ball because it wasn't as if we didn't create anything. Vardy takes that sort of chance from a ball over the top 99 times out of 100. Lallana should have scored but hit it right at the keeper. Alli had a chance cleared off the line. Sturridge only had to make contact from a lovely ball over the top. Clyne broke free down the right and should have scored. These were all good chances - we carved them open plenty of times and if one of them goes in, everyone is happy. It was just one of those nights.

I'm happy to summarise it as "one of those nights" as well, but my point was mainly when we DID find that 'killer pass' (which wasn't enough in the space of 90 minutes set out against a side not intent to leave their own half) we couldn't finish our dinner.

And yes, it's embarrassing that we couldn't finish top of that group.

It makes me smile that a goal conceded in injury time to prevent a victory is glossed over as being irrelevant yet an injury time winner is somehow lucky.

I read that as we don't have anyone who can break sides down. Which we do because we created plenty. You're correct about not being able to finish for toffee but I can't agree with the first part of this quote.

Saying it's 'embarrassing' is a bit much though. Fine lines - one of those chances goes in or Russia don't get a last gasp equaliser and everyone is happy.

Tactically I don't see how the inclusion of Jamie Vardy in a high pressing system is ever going to work. I don't understand the thinking, Vardy has to have space beyond a back four.

We can't control how other teams set up, though. And everyone was crying out for Vardy to start ahead of Kane after the Russia/Wales games, so I'm not sure what else we could have done, really.

Yeah, I certainly agree that it was daft to leave him on when Slovakia decided to camp in their own penalty area but starting him nearly paid off on the one occasion he DID find space behind them and should have scored.

If you remove the high press you allow your opponents time on the ball to play out. Both Wales and Slovakia would love the opportunity to play through Bale and Hamsik, we should welcome that because it then encourages a more open game with space opening up for both sides.
You have to present opportunities for both sides to play.

Almost certain if we get Hungary or Iceland we'll have to contend with same problem, reality is had Vardy and Alli chances gone in we would be commenting on a comfortable win.
I think Slovakia were vastly underrated before the whole thing started.
Movement needs to be far quicker and incisive in the last third, delivery from wide areas had been woeful at times in all three games.

Calling Deutsch, any chance of you doing the permutations for Group F? What chance have we got of facing Portugal?

Portugal - need a win against Hungary on Wednesday to be certain of progression, and that will be as group winners if Iceland fail to beat Austria. If they win and Iceland win, Portugal must better Iceland's scoreline for goal difference superiority to finish top. With Portugal and Iceland currently level on points and with the same goal difference, separating the two for a possible second- or third-place finish would come down to goals scored (currently Portugal 1, Iceland 2), then fair play and then lots drawn.

I think with the way it's panned out, they're either going to win their final game and win the group, or they won't and they'll come 3rd or 4th. They *could* come 2nd but on the balance of probabilities I don't think they will. I could be wrong though. It has been known.
