The NFL Thread

Seeing a lot of headlines that the refs gave the game to the Chiefs with the Bills failed 4th down. Can't say I agree. It was impossible to say 100% whether Allen made it or not, therefore they couldn't overturn the original call.
Much more egregious was the "catch" that hit the ground.

Well I guess the upside is I was going to really struggle to watch it this year with a 9 month old at home and sleep being an issue. Not bothered about missing this, just hope the Eagles win I guess, Saquon deserves it if nothing else.

Just finished watching the second game. I started wanting the Chiefs to win because I think Buffalo are the better team. Pretty quickly into the game that changed though, firstly because there's just an air of inevitability about play off Kansas City, this isn't the team that got unlikely win after unlikely win during the season. Secondly because of Swift and Donna Kelce cam. Up to shots of them after every bloody TD even though Travis wasn't involved in any of them.

If Philly play like they did last night they should still win, but I just don't see how you can pick against the Chiefs. Andy Reid's record after an effective bye is something like 27-5.

I fully understand why people won't watch it, Sirianni in particular is unlikeable and Chiefs fatigue.

Looking back at last night's game the Bills were clearly 2nd best and deserved to lose, and mostly that is down to coaching. All season the Allen sneak/push has been unstoppable. From the first attempt at it, it was clear the Chiefs had a plan to stop it and it worked. Yet the OC kept calling it over and over again. And the Chiefs stopped it (mostly) over and over again. What's that definition of insanity again? Defensively the Bills did nothing to stop the Mahomes rollout/scramble. The only time they put a spy on him, Milano got him for a sack. They never did it again. Ridiculous.

Then there is the talent acquisition. The Bills top draft picks since they got Josh Allen have been: Coleman, Kincaid, Elam, Rousseau, Epenesa and Oliver. Not one big time difference maker amongst them. They are at best average, at worst total busts. It isn't good enough. Until they start hitting on their top draft pick they will always be behind the very best.

The officiating wasn't the difference between the 2 teams, but it was questionable and one-sided. The Worthy contested catch was clearly incomplete. The Chiefs might still have scored on that drive anyway, so there's that. But it was a horrible, horrible blatant call. The 4th down sneak late in the 4th quarter, was close but having watched it, Allen made it. The official with the best view gave him the 1st down, the one from the other side over-ruled it. And when it comes to a close game those subtle helping hands from the officials make a big impact.

I won't watch the Super Bowl. I hope the Eagles win it and blow the Chiefs away big style. I'll wake up after the game to see the score and I expect to see the KC Swifts have won.

I think your coaching point is spot on as are your ones around the 2 big calls. Also although Mahomes didn't get any penalty calls himself I don't think it, I thought the Bills played too conservatively when he ran with the ball, presumably consciously trying to avoid giving them away and a coaching point.

For all the noise, self included, about them not being very good and a defeat is only around the corner, I now think it was deliberate. Coaching a vanilla game plan, knowing they'd make the post season and then ramping it up. Designed run plays for Mahomes being an obvious example.Having the best HC and the best QB in the game is a pretty heady mix.

Good point about Mahomes. It was like the Bills didn't want to touch Mahomes for fear of the officials tacking on another 15 yards for daring to touch little Patty boy. So while there were no egregious penalties called for Roughing the Passer etc, the history and especially the recency of the 2 appalling calls in the Texans game maybe had an impact. The hidden yards of the favourable officiating the Chiefs get.

I get that the calls Mahomes has gotten this season have been... let's go with "irritating", but "little Patty boy" does him a huge disservice.

He's just made history as the only QB to win consecutive Super Bowls and then just appear in a third. Nobody, no player or team, has ever done that. Not the Dolphins under Shula, not the Broncos under Shanahan, not even the Patriots with Brady and Belichick. The odds are extraordinarily against them, and a few bunk penalties doesn't really erase or even put an asterisk on this kind of consistency in a league literally designed to stop "dynasties" from happening.

They're the real thing.

Disclaimer: I fucking love Andy Reid and honestly kind of have since his days with McNabb in Philly. So maybe I'm more biased than I realize.
