The Music Thread Strikes Back

“No, motherfucker, I don’t want to hear Don’t Stop Believin’ again”.

In no particular order…

Flag Day - The Housemartins
Common People - Pulp
Going Underground - The Jam
Two Tribes - Frankie Goes to Hollywood
The Saturday Boy - Billy Bragg
The Town I Loved So Well - The Dubliners
Hey Sandy - Harvey Andrews
Beeswing - sung by anyone
She Used to be Mine - Sara Bareilles
The Streets of New York - Wolfe Tones

And because they got a mention…A Solid Bond in Your Heart - The Style Council.
Are you talking about the Richard Thompson 'Beeswing?' Didn't know anyone had covered that, thats a great song, toss up between that and Vincent Black Lightning for my favourite song by him.

Just thinking of a list of 10 that are out of my usual noisy genre but have always struck me as absolute bangers and really good at what they do

Temptation - Heaven 17 (I just absolutely love the chord progression in this song - proper build up that makes it epic)
Shout - Tears for Fears
Atomic - Blondie
Are Friends Electric - Tubeway Army
Vienna - Ultravox
Don't Go - Yazoo
Suffragette City - Bowie
Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode
Live and Let Die - Wings
Crazy Horses - The Osmonds (I hate most of their output, but this one song is absolutely fucking brilliant)

Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks
Stoned Love - The Supremes
Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harem
Behind Blue Eyes - The Who
Riverman - Nick Drake
I Need You - The Beatles
Tin Soldier - The Small Faces
Reach Out, I'll be there - Four Tops
Complete Control - The Clash
In The Crowd - The Jam

inspired by whiter shade of pale in wolftone's list (plus riverman and tin soldier) here's a pre-punk ten I love which I'll write quickly before Queen bitch, perfect day or some other hurdy gurdy psych masterpiece sneak in..

flaming - pink floyd
maybe the people would be the times.. - love
Electricity - captain beefheart
sweet jane - velvet underground
all the young dudes - mott the hoople
make me smile - harley and cockney rebel
some misunderstanding - gene clark
some velvet morning - lee hazlewood, Nancy sinatra
wouldn't you miss me - syd barrett
love is like oxygen - sweet

as syd might say these tracks have tattooed my braaaiin.

may have to consider a female vocals list given how lacking they've been from the two I've done.

Heart Shaped Box - Nirvana
Romeo And Juliet - Dire Straits
Warning Sign - Coldplay
Strip My Mind - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Absolutely impossible getting it down to 10. I mean, while typing this I am thinking of songs I’ve missed. It would change hourly!

Big fan of the Silverchair & Brand New shouts on earlier pages.

Any female vocal list for me would have Can the Can by Suzi Quattro and Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush right at the top of it I reckon.
Yeah I've already thought of two I would have put at the top just after I posted, Kate Bush for one and Julianne Regan from All About Eve the other.

Found it impossible not to overthink this and suffer the ensuing head spin and the attempts to simplify it made it even worse, so just stripped it back ended up with 2 lists.

1 - let you lot do the thinking and cherry-picked the ones that resonate from best of yours:

Elephant Stone - Stone Roses
True Faith - New Order
Party Fears Two - The Associates
Make Me Smile - Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel
Heroes - Bowie
Duel - Propaganda (wasn’t expecting that BroughtonWolf 👊)
Comfortably Numb - PF
Are Friends Electric - Tubeway Army
Five Get Over Excited - The Housemartins
Mirror In The Bathroom - The Beat

2 - then recognising how any list is constantly changing and how mood and circumstance change everything figured my 10 favourites would have to be in the moment and whatever playlist you’d chosen to match the mood at that time. On that basis just pulled 10 from the current car playlist which elevate the mood every time. Doesn’t matter if they’re a bit crap, or cheesy, or don’t really stand up to scrutiny etc, but all have good memories attached and with spring in the air make me feel happy and that can be no bad thing:

Sweet Love (Nightshift) - Busy Signal
Levels - Avicili
Stereo Love - Fewtile
In My Bloodline - Ryan Gilmore
Friendships (Lost My Love) - Pascal Letoubion
Bette Davis Eyes (Energy Mix) - Sonia Davis
Uptown Funk - Bruno Mars
