I'm not really sure where to put this, but anyway, here goes.

I saw the high-lights of the Real vs Athletico Madrid game last night, Athletico were clean through just outside the box before the attacker got cynically hacked down to deny an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Player gets sent off and Athletico get a free-kick (with about 5 minutes to go), Real then go on to win on penalties.

It really doesn't feel fair to me that this can happen and saw a suggestion that a DOGSO should result in a penalty even if it's outside the box, with the same rules applying around red / yellow cards (i.e. if you went for the ball it's a yellow, no intent to play the ball it's a red).

Just wondered what people thought?

Oof, I really dislike them. Also dislike them being painted as some sort of heroic sacrifice. "Well cheated, fella!"

Was reading something recently about Ferguson giving Ole a massive bollocking about integrity for committing one years ago, even if it did save them a point. I'm with him.

Not sure there would have been that much outrage. Things like this happen all the time, it’s just not that often they happen in cup finals in the last few mins of extra time.

Incredibly the late Jimmy Hill suggested something similar in the 70s and it was also a 18 yard penalty kick for professional fouls anywhere iirc?

Penalties galore in Naples at the moment.

Hosts currently 2-0 up at the break thanks to two spot kicks but Perugia had just had a chance to pull one back on the stroke of half time from a penalty of their own. Looked a very harsh one to award, Napoli defender lunging in to block a cross and the was deflected up from his leg onto his arm and out for a corner.
