The Live Match Discussion Thread: 2019/2020

Villa have just snapped up Reina so they will have to look for another over the hill player.

Not gone there yet as he is injured (why you would sign an injured keeper is beyond me, but there you go).

This handball thing needs to go next season ahead of anything else, such nonsense, not that West Ham deserved anything.

VAR and this handball nonsense costs another team points. It's awful. Not VAR at fault per se, but the rule is an abomination.

The handball rule is one of the worst things to ever happen to football. It's a complete crock of shit.

Not often we agree I know, but I am 100% with you on that. It's ruining the game and the administrators just can't see the damage.

They just can't seem to grasp the difference between that and Henry's handball vs Ireland (where he deliberately dragged the ball into his path with his hand).

I wouldn't mind them asking Oliver to have a look there to see if he thinks it's deliberate. 99.9999999% sure he would have said no and we get the right decision. Don't just automatically disallow everything especially when the same bloody rules don't apply to other incidents around the rest of the pitch or even for defenders in their own box.

I've been in agreement with you and Johnny in the last 24 hours. It's the End of Days I tell thee...

That's what makes it so utterly shit, how can you have one rule for attackers and a different rule for defenders? It's just mindblowingly stupid and whoever's decided it should be sacked and given a job refereeing walking football...

Almost certainly! It just goes to show that this nonsense unites all the fans in hate of it if we can all agree!

Now, I am not entirely sure about this, but I think that when they agreed VAR was coming into the premier league the PGMOL made the change to the handball rule as they felt it would be easy to police with VAR replays etc. I could be wrong on that, but I certainly don't remember IFAB making that change. So I am going to blame Mike Riley and get the pitchforks and torches and head his way.

The instant Dendonkers goal against Leicester was chalked off the precedent for the whole season was set, unfortunately

Frustrating hearing Micky Gray discussing the handball incident last night and he cited the recent VVD 'handball' in a build up to a goal, Gray said he couldn't remember who it was against until the other presenters helped him out by saying "it was the City game", they were all in agreement!

The law is pathetic but the reaction to that one last night which in the current climate was pretty clear cut compared to say, ours on the opening day is a bit irritating

I find the reaction to it bizarre. I’d even argue there the sort of ones to rule is kind of there for. If he doesn’t catch it then they don’t score. (I know it wasn’t deliberate).

Obviously Boly’s one is a shambles. If you chopped his arm off we probably still score that one.

The media outcry on this one is because it has gone against West Ham. Its de riguer in sports media circles to have several West Ham fans as journos.

I would personally be a lot happier if the hand ball rule returned to where it was. I would rather see teams get away with a bit of luck like Boly against City than multiple goals chalked off and inconsistency between how you rule an offence dependent on whether you are attacking or defending. It's a mess.

I said right at the start of the season, what do you do if an attacker bollocks a cross which accidentally hits a defender on the arm in his penalty area and drops to his feet allowing him to smash the ball clear upfield where the forward latches on to the clearance and scores, which makes the defender a direct assister of the goal? Is it then handball as he is considered an attacker and therefore a penalty given?

Rice after the game was moaning that it wasn't intentional but with the current rule that doesn't matter and it did assist in the move unlike Boly's on the opening day. I even heard a West Ham fan saying "no way was it a handball". Yes it was! Whether you agree with the ruling or not it was a handball!

Controversially I think that's the right call.

You aren't allowed to use your hands / arms and even though it wasn't intentional if the ball doesn't hit Rice's arm west ham don't score.

The decision feels about right for me

If I was playing I’d be appealing for that to be given as handball
