The January 2025 Transfer Thread

I see Munetsi being used in a particular set of circumstances to give us more physicality in the midfield when required. I could of course be talking bollocks and he turns out to be the new VierašŸ˜

Reading through this thread, it appears a high % of the forum are ā€œsub-consciously racistā€, which of course is nonsense.

Letā€™s be honest. People are commenting on it because itā€™s GW. Someone else posts similar and it doesnā€™t get mentioned.

It reminds me of this -

A high % of people are unconsciously biased though? That's... that's how unconscious bias works?

You seem to be operating under the misunderstanding that pointing these things out is the same as condemning, and that admitting to having that kind of bias is an admission of, what, being evil? It's not black and white, it's just a polite way of keeping each other to a higher standard.

I love the way you have to go back 30 years for the first example that pops into your head.

Look, it's clearly not bullshit. It happens, there have been multiple studies confirming this. You not liking it, not understanding it, or not agreeing with it doesn't make it any less true. As I said, obviously there are many black players that you can describe as skillfull and intelligent - but it is a fact that physical attributes are talked about more often with black players than white players, often ahead of the other things that they bring to the table.

Saying Marco Guehi is quick and strong isn't racist. But race does contribute to the fact that Guehi will be described is quick and strong, whereas John Stones is classy and intelligent
I do think things like that are getting better though. You are hearing about black players technical abilities more.

Ironically only 4/10 of the quickest logged in the premier league last season were black players.

In this instance I do think it was more who the poster was - obviously not helped by the American comment afterā€¦

Letā€™s more on with our lives, and all jokes aside, I do hope he is quick and aggressive, as we need some of that in our back line

On the black players are quick issue, probably irrelevant fact ( or my subconscious racism showing)
Last white Olympic gold medal sprinter? Alan Wells Moscow 1980.

To be fair I subconsciously wouldā€™ve assumed all the quickest players in the prem were black, or the majority were. As mentioned last season that wasnā€™t the case.

Sprinting and football are two different things though arenā€™t they. So I doubt youā€™re going to get Olympic sprinters playing high level football. Very rare in football players sprint for longer than 10/20m. And itā€™s not always in a straight line either

I will admit that I did not expect us to make 2 signings yesterday. On the face of it, 3 new players in this window isn't bad at all. Agbadou seems to have settled well - wasn't impressed with him at Newcastle but he's been much better since then. He was terrific against Man Utd and looked comfortable with Toti back in the side at the weekend.

I have absolutely no idea what either Djiga or Munetsi are like - if they are able to come straight into the side and make a difference, then I think it will have been a successful window.

A back 3 of Djiga - Agba - Toti seems a far better combination than anything involving Doherty and/or Santi who shouldn't be anywhere near a PL starting XI.

Three signings is a pleasant surprise, for January it is pretty good and you would say Pereira has been backed.

Doesn't mean the window has been good yet, we backed Lage summer 2022 but nothing worked out. First impression on Agbadou is positive. Let's see on the other two but an effort has been made to improve on the weakest part of the squad.

Doherty had Rogers in his pocket on Saturday, I'd be surprised if he is dropped in the short term.
No issue with doc short term, think heā€™s done alright to be fair to him. Helps now he wonā€™t be alongside Bueno. As then thereā€™s 2 supposed weak links side by side

Youā€™d hope defensively we will have strengthened, given I donā€™t think it was that difficult to do. Letā€™s wait and see

Without wanting to be unnecessarily harsh on Doc, I thought Rogers kind of pocketed himself. He was really poor.

Although we spent a lot of money in 2022, it was very poorly spent imo and not just hindsight. Guedes never wanted to come, Sasa was made of biscuits (we knew that before we bought him), Collins and Nunes were poor for us, although we did make a small profit on both.
At least the signings we've made this time seem to be fit and actually want to be at Wolves, plus what the coach wanted.

I'm pleased with the window in that we appear to have provided players in the positions that VP was after.

Any manager who could get that level of performance and organisation out of those 11 players last weekend deserved to be fully backed and that's what we seem to have done

No Lage defender, but I'd say we spent money rather than backed him as such. Nunes and Guedes were Shi/Mendes deals and had little to do with what the manager or squad needed. If LL is to be believed Periera has spent the month rejecting players put before him, a power of veto neither Lage or GON had. It's possible at the end of the window he just said fuck it and took who they could get, but in theory they've signed players he wanted or the profile at least.

Agbadou already looks a good signing, the other 2 who knows.

Well you are being unnecessarily harsh there.

Rogers has been one of the best players in the league this season. Doc was smashing him from early on, it set the tone.

In a perfect world, still need a backup striker and/or a backup winger the coach would use (so not Gomes).

But turns out, after predicting 0 new signings the club proved me wrong and I am in fact fallible. I will take this as a life lesson and a chance at some introspection and growth, touch some grass and wonder what else in the world I may be wrong on and could improve my opinion on.

Is Matt Doherty a useful player for a PL side in 2025 perhaps? šŸ¤”
