The Football News Thread 2024/25

The Sky Sports voting for top best Premier League striker ever. It's fucking Alan Shearer the goals and stats say it all, but no Carragher you have to number it for Balon Doir etc etc. Bollocks. It's Shearer so just fuck off.

I'd have Henry, Rooney and Kane all above Shearer (popping my tin hat on now)

I'm judging it on football ability and my enjoyment watching them. Henry has 2 PL titles btw 😘

Longevity comes into it I suppose but Suarez was absolutely unstoppable for 18 months or so.

The subject is greatest Prem forward (not striker)

Also, if it was done purely on goals scored it wouldn't be much of a conversation

It's not a debate though is it? Shearer scored the most goals.
Surely if you look at it like that it’s goals scored per game isn’t it or goals per minute. Haaland is top of both but of those with over 100 Henry, Aguero and Kane all within .01 of each other per game but Aguero best per minute.

Hard to compare one against another as a lot depends on the service they were getting from their team mates and who they were playing for. Andy Cole both for Newcastle and Utd was phenominal, not so for England though, hardly got a look in.
Shearer has to be the best I would have thought. Poacher, header, dirty, tough, could shoot from distance, free kicks.
I loved Bergkamp, genius.

Yeah, fair.

Penalties a factor too.

Obviously goals scored is one of your biggest drivers.

Kane left England 47 goals behind Shearer but had made 121 fewer appearances. He's averaged 21 goals per season so it would be reasonable to suggest he'd have surpassed Shearer with games to spare

I get it can only be measured on what the players have achieved rather than what they could have achieved but I don't think it's cut and dry.
