I don't like Ronaldo, but his goal against Roma was superb.

Took a deflection off Florenzi. Not sure it wouldn't have been saved otherwise.

That said, he had Florenzi on skates for most of the second half.

Bristol is a horrendous city in sporting terms. It's crying out for some success.

In footballing terms, maybe. I would suggest rugby and cricket there isn't so bad...

The rugby team has never won the league title to my knowledge and they've been outside the top flight for 6-7 years now too. Gloucestershire had a decent one day team 10-15 years ago but in terms of first class cricket again they've never won anything.

For a city the size of Bristol, their teams have a remarkable lack of success. Must be one of the least successful sporting cities in Europe per capita.

Fair enough, rugby team not as good as I thought they were. Glos won the 50 over comp last year though.
I'm intrigued, any other contenders for big city/shit sporting success?

Obviously complicated by the city being divided for decades but Berlin is shit for football. Hertha have hardly won anything and the other sides in Berlin are tiny. We'll ignore Dynamo Berlin's exploits in the DDR being as their titles were quite obviously bent.

Bristol is an average size city which is surrounded by fields and sheep. It has a very small catchment area, unlike industrial cities in the north and the midlands.

*points up*

Cleveland.

The problem for Bristol rugby is they have the smaller city of Bath next door who have won the league many times, the cup even more times, and have been European champions.

Essen is another good shout. 9th biggest city in Germany, Rot-Weiß Essen haven't been in the top flight since the late 70s, never won anything in the modern era, currently dicking around in the regionalised fourth tier. Like Berlin, the other clubs are tiny. As far as I can work out, Berlin's basketball and ice hockey teams are reasonably successful (not that I follow either), but Essen doesn't have anything.

Chris Brunt hit in the face by a missile thrown by one of his own supporters, just shows how pathetically important losing a game of football has become to some fans.

I ave just seen the incident on television. It really does beggar belief.

Kindly Uncle Eddie Davies, saviour of Bolton (who has charged sizeable amounts of interest on the money he has loaned to the club for nearly two decades) wants the following when he sells the club:

- A bonus if and when they get back to the Championship and Premier League after he sells the club
- A cut of all future TV and sponsorship money
- A suite at the ground named after him

He has, of course, poured a lot of money into the club and interest payments or not, he'll wind up losing a lot of it. But that is football club ownership. For a supposed devoted fan of the club his actions look very odd to me.

Dzeko now up there with some of the best misses.
