Does that put Dicko on the reserve sheet?

They still have another forward on the reserve list, so I presume not.

A lot are being rescinded this season. A change in how the panel are dealing with them?

A lot of sendings off that are very poor. I'm convinced the standard of refereeing is as bad as it's been over recent years.

In a nutshell, yes. Raheem Sterling escaped any punishment for a similar thing in the Liverpool v Swansea game, so there was every likelihood that Routledge would have his red card rescinded. I think it showed a consistency in how these things are dealt with.

More work than ever is being put into improving the standards of match officials. I do not expect universal agreement, but the feedback from football league clubs, and clubs in the pyramid suggest that standards are improving.

I don't doubt that more work than ever is going into improving the standards but it isn't working in my opinion. Clubs can say what they like but i don't believe them. It's a difficult job and i tend not to judge them on situations where i need 3 or 4 replays to actually know whats happened but when i can see it happen live on tv and call it or it's clear that the referee was in a good position yet still makes poor decisions constantly then i have to judge them.

For me the standard of refereeing is getting worse overall, there are a few good referees out there but then there are the ones like Mike Jones who should not be near a professional game who brings the standard right down.

How is that feedback given though and how is it acted on?

I can't remember the last time I saw anybody get offside on a goal kick wrong, even in the most biased of Sunday league games yet I have seen it in a Wolves game this season. That is more than embarrassing for PGMOL, maybe the strategy for improving and educating referees is flawed?

The feedback is given in different ways. Firstly the assessor will give his report, and this will give a detailed report into match officials and their performances. The club itself will also send a report in whereby they will comment on the officials, and also give them a mark. Also some ex professional footballers work for the Premier League, and give their view on the referee. The referee will also have his own mentor who will identify areas which need to be worked on. This is all a big improvement on how it used to be.

Regarding giving offside from a goalkick, well what can I say. That is totally unacceptable. I can only imagine the assistant thought the ball was touched by another player.

The strategy for improving standards is an ongoing one, that is constantly monitored, and while not perfect, it is certainly moving in the right direction.

I think that's good Frank and clearly moving in the right direction. As I've mentioned before (in a somewhat heated debate) I've had the pleasure of sitting with assessors and it was very insightful. Particularly as the assessor knew what was happening from the stands and had a better view than the officials on some incidents but not others. I asked about the feedback because the assessor was so knowledgable. It seems a travesty people like Mike Jones and Stuart Atwell are associated with some very knowledgable people and their attitude and ability so poor and seemingly uncorrectable.

My question is, does the selection panel have a poorer crop of officials to choose from currently, do they just select badly or does the education system not work as well as previously? Given we have produced possibly the best referee of the last decade across the globe where do you think the selection process has gone wrong?

.

I think the answer lies in your first paragraph. There are a lot of excellent assessors who can quickly identify areas where development is needed, but it is up to the official to take that on board and and strive to improve. You see I do not think we have a poorer crop of officials. There is a lot of work that is done to help level 7 referees progress. In my opinion the problem is that too many referees are being promoted too quickly. Stuart Attwell is a good example. As a young referee he showed a lot of potential, and was fast tracked through the various levels, and found himself at level one with barely any experience. I was not surprised at the problems he had, experience is a vital asset in a good referee.

Ched Evans off to Maltese side Hibernians.

That piece of work Stephen Vaughan who ran Chester into the ground and has all kinds of iffy connections with gangsters is involved with that club.

Does the assessor have access to video (or live) TV with replays before submitting the report or does he only watch the game in the stands?

Watches the game in the stands.

Good grief, maybe they should rethink that.So they basically have a guy who has a worse view than the referees assessing them.

Not really. Frank will have better knowledge of referee assessment than me, having said that I can tell you unequivocally that you see more from the stand in terms of position and reactions than anybody can through the TV or at pitchside.

It is the reason lots of managers go in the stands.
