The Fitness Thread

Ah, what a day!

I fell apart harder than Wolves in the 01/02 season!

Was cruising until the 15/16th mile at planned PB pace (was going for sub 2.49), then, very suddenly threw up my previous gel and salt tablet.

From that moment on it was a grim battle, 10 miles of stop/start as I couldn't take on anymore fuel without being sick and then as form was poor, the muscle cramps kick in.

So I rolled in at 3.09.33

The heat probably had something to do with it, it was 28c when I finished, but I think i was overambitious with how much fuel I was taking on and my stomach rejected it, and that was that.

Live and learn, I'll go again! 🇪🇸

Absolutely outstanding time, @Elephant Pyjamas

A massive well done to you mate

(I came 2nd in a Santa Jog around the local park this morning. 4.1km as they couldn't measure 5km. Let's be honest, EP did the better run, didn't he?)

I was stubborn, and didn't change my plan, with hindsight I'd have been far more sensible knocking 5 seconds a mile off and not fueling so aggressively.

However, that said, you can't run a marathon every week, so there is a lot to be said for rolling the dice anyway!

Also whilst we were sat having that beer, watching people run past at about 40km - a woman ran past who had a plastic bag around her waist dangling down around her legs and arse...

It looked so strange, "why has she done that...?" On closer inspection you could see she'd shit all down her left leg and was using the bag to kind of keep her dignity, but all it did was draw attention to her.

I was torn between being sickened and thinking, "wow, that is incredible, she's still running!!"

I'm sure you've been checking for as long as you've been able, but conditions look good at the moment - although obviously warmer than what you've been training in!

Well done EP, that's a great time, especially with your race plan going to pot!

Alex Yee is a freak (in the best way possible)

I saw him training in Long Eaton park once, you do realise how fast these people run until you see it in person!

Went to Sandwell Valley Parkrun this morning.

Bloody thing was cancelled as we were on the start line at 9am as there were bulls loose on the course, along with several dozen cows.

Insert joke about fat cows causing havoc in West Bromwich here.

So, I have somehow managed to reach 16st, which is "slightly overweight" for someone barely 5'8"!

It's not so much that I am going to do dry January, I have decided that I am going to run the Northallerton 10k towards the end of May (Sunday 24th) to raise money for my Squadron. I am hoping this will give me the drive and determination to lose weight and get fitter/healthier as I haven't felt the best when walking any decent distance at pace.

Thank you to @Aikiwolf for the chat and advice and if people don't mind, I'll keep you updated with how I'm doing and also share my "just giving" link nearer the time.

Here goes!

AND... Week one is over, how did I do

Last Sunday went for a walk with Mrs D, about 6k
Monday about a 5k walk with a bit of jogging thrown in and to finish off
Wednesday, 2.5 mile "run". (walk for 90 seconds, jog for 60 seconds) Had to stop a couple of times and sit on a bench and it took me 38 minutes from front door to front door.
Friday, the same "run" only this time I was able to keep moving without sitting down/stopping. I mean, it's uphill back to my street and I WANTED to stop, my brain telling me it's fine to stop and my muscles screaming at me but in the nick of time, as I started the uphill section, a song hit in my headphones with a brilliant, thumping drum beat and that powered me upwards. Did that in 33 minutes!

Today was weigh-day... I am down to 15st 2lbs, a loss of 12lbs in a week. That has really given me a new purpose and a huge boost!
No bread, very few biscuits at home and none at work and no alcohol. I can do this!

Oh, but please tell me the running bit will get easier!! 😂
