The Film Thread

Pearl Harbor is up there as the biggest load of bollocks ever committed to celluloid.

Agreed along with U571 , It amazes me how the Americans can totaly rewrite history to suite their agenda is beyond me.

By the way Sharknado is up there with Citizen Kane for me, at least in that you don't have to work out what 'Rosebud' was ???

Monsters is probably the worst I've seen, 90 minutes of pure fucking meaningless drivel.

I once saw American Pie 2 in German. For entertainment value, up there with our 0-0 home draw vs McDons under Ken.

Robocop 3 is the barometer of awful films. God, watched on a rainy day whilst trying to pass the time waiting for a friend. A horrendous experience.

Dunkirk. Very very good, but not as good as I thought it would be.

Beautifully shot, with constant tension building through a constant violin arpeggio and the screams of the stukas being incorporated into the soundtrack.

Definitely catch it in the cinema, the sounds of the dive bombers and the shells landing are much better on the big screen.
Great acting but for me, the highlight was the stuff in the air with the spitfires. I am fascinated with these gorgeous airplanes, and Christopher Nolan has really done them justice, beautiful scenes of spitfires sailing through the clouds and swooping down behind the Heinkels.
There wasn't a whole lot of stuff on the beach tbh, a lot of the story revolves around Mark Rylance sailing his pleasureboat across the channel with his son, or up in the air with Tom Hardy in his Spitfire.

But it's a great story and I'm glad it's been told, it will appeal to your British sentiments as it ends with a familiar piece of classical music by a British composer.

i thought that bit was good too.

a bit underwhelmed by the rest of it. I appreciate the film seemed more about personalising some of the experiences that individual soldiers had but it undermined the scale of it for me. it felt a bit minimalist.

more context would have helped, a lot more incoming boats would have helped - I saw maybe 10-15?

the mixed sequencing looked like it could be interesting, but didn't seem to go anywhere. in the end, not sure what the purpose of that was for.

You summed it up better than I did. Agree with all of that, it did feel minimalistic, and more content would have improved it, I actually wanted more dialogue etc.

And yes, there wasn't a whole load of boats on show and I agree, it felt scaled down. This was why I thought it was not as good as I expected.

The continuity was off too, random flashbacks from day to previous nights with little backstory.

like when the second fighter pilot went down we saw that bit from the third fighter's perspective. then later in the film we see it from the second fighter's perspective. I really like things like that, it can be used to put you off kilter and create more of an eerie feel to a film, especially if there's something slightly different about one of those scenes. but that's more for a different genre, rather than a semi historical movie about Dunkirk.

have you seen the film Triangle. completely flawed but ingeniously spooky in that sort of way.

The Hatton Garden Job. Not worth the bother or your time.

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut on tonight on Dave at 10pm

Can't believe that I have not seen this yet - always good to watch something for the first time even if everyone else has seen it years ago

I watched that by accident the other night and, I'm sorry, but I must disagree with you, it wasn't good enough to be called bilge :)
An extremely fair comment. Please accept my apologies.

Just back from seeing Dunkirk.

Absolutely loved it. It's spectacular, and I can't think of a better sounding film. The effects, the soundtrack, it's unreal. Definitely going to listen to Hans Zimmer's soundtrack tomorrow. I'd say it's his best work.

I did think the number of boats looked a bit low but I can't think of much else I didn't like. Filled with tension, strong performances and emotion - definitely one to watch on the big screen.

I'm going tomorrow to see this. Read a few reviews about this one, some good, some not so good, some that were disappointed. I'm still looking forward to seeing it, and have been looking forward to it for some time.

Yeah the reviews have been mixed - people with whom I usually agree regarding films didn't enjoy it as much as I did.

Personally I think it's a masterpiece.

I didn't 'spot' it, but I did notice it... ;)

Sunny Singh has more or less eviscerated Dunkirk for whitewashing in The Guardian today. Decent article if you can find it, although the author makes a lot of accusatory statements that will probably only serve to turn people off but they really understand the point.
