Hamilton reportedly had 1.3 litres of fuel in the car when he stopped. You need 1 litre for the FIA sample and apparently 2 litres to complete an in lap.

Hamilton removed from Quali results and starts from the back of the grid!

Last season he was screwed by his own mistakes, he is being done this time around by his team

Should be 10th as worst case surely! His car would have been legal for Q2.

Its not a fair penalty though is it.

Being removed from all 3 stages of Quali is very harsh.

Ted Kravitz: "It will have to be an absolute concrete case that McLaren can put to the stewards to say 'look, this is the proof that we were using more fuel than intended. But if they can't produce that concrete evidence then Lewis Hamilton could very easily be kicked out of qualifying altogether and have to start at the back of the grid or the pitlane."

Gary Anderson/BBC F1 McLaren refueller turned the tap to 'drain' instead of 'fill' briefly, realised his error but engineers sent car out.

It's evidently not Lewis' fault, and it's very harsh on him but the team have made a significant cock up.

I will stand by my opinion that it is very harsh.

If it's the team's fault then maybe they should take a points deduction from the constructors championship.

Its very harsh on Lewis, but the rules are the rules and McLaren have broken them. Remember they were reprimanded for this before.

Hence why its harsh. The penalty should have been removing his Q3 time and a penalty on the team in terms of constructer points/££.

Lewis taking the full punishment is over the top.

China - Gearbox change. That's a basic rule and applies to everybody so there's nothing harsh or personal about that.

Monaco - Risky move, at a corner you can't really overtake on and it was unsuccessful resulting in damage to Massa's car. Could possibly be seen as a racing accident.

Malaysia - He changed direction more than once, that's against the rules.
