He had an earlier chance under the VSC to change tyres...
And Max would have done the opposite in that case and would have had track position. Merc have made plenty of errors over time, but they're not to blame today. Completely out of their hands.

Yep should have pitted him then. Max would never have made it to the end on his old tyres.

And Lewis would've got Max back easily, easily, on track - but they didn't want to put him in a position where he might have to fight

Easy to say now, but being 18s up the road from your biggest danger rather than trying to find a way back ahead is clearly the low risk option. Track position is key (hopefully not from next year). You can't predict Latifi managing to bin it on one of the track's slowest corners.

Ok so is anyone out there seriously claiming the best driver won the race today?

What they maybe could've done is clear Lafiti quicker, not let lapped cars through, then given 2 clear laps for them the race - including Max getting past backmarkers which would've lost him a few secs and really have make those softs go fast

You kind of could predict it tbh, the backmarkers are shocking quality even if Lafiti has has a couple of decent points.

And fingers crossed for next year, we massively need cars that are more racy

Putting Lewis in a position where he needed to pass max would have been an awful idea.

Mercedes got it spot on

What are people missing here, I said they should not have left Lewis on such old tyres at the end. That doesn't mean pit under the SC. If anything, go all the way back to Max's first stop - no way was Max undercutting Lewis, he should've held those tyres together for another 10 laps then taken his pit stop. Mercedes did get the strategy wrong, for the whole race

More nonsense

They had the race won. VSC puts a spanner in the works. They still have the race won. They simply cannot pit under the SC. So where did they get it wrong??

11 seconds ahead with 8 to go tells me they got a lot right.

It isn't nonsense. If they'd pitted him under the VSC Verstappen would have been forced to come in for new tyres eventually or just have Lewis breeze past him with zero effort.
