The F1 Thread

What actually happened? Saw them try a few laps behind the safety car and then give up but then I watched the football instead. Seen stuff on social media since about Russell's first podium so did they just call it based on those few safety car laps in formation? Surely that doesn't count for anything?

Was there any actual racing or were all the laps merely a procession behind the safety car?

Yep, 2 laps

You'd think that's the only part they should classify as racing, and surely well short of the threshold to award anything for. Must be a difficult thing for them to call off though with the sums of money involved and nigh on impossibility of rearranging at a later date.

Hamilton was spot on, the fans should get their money back.

Only reason they sent them out for classification was because they knew they couldn't have the race tomorrow.

Apparently 2 laps completed is enough to call it a race under F1 regs. So essentially they got the cars to sit behind the safety car, knowing thats as much as they would do just to get an official result, rather than just call the race off. If they did that for the TV companies or sponsors, utterly pointless as there was no racing.

Hope the weather is better in Maxland next weekend

Then you cancel it really rather than make fake wins/points. I mean great for George to add some points and get a 2nd place but its meaningless really.
FIA clearly worried about losing races in the America/UAE so need to cram in results. Think they said they need 16 races to get a season completed and be able to declare a Champion.

Watched some of the Porsche race before hand, that was racable. Moving all the European races to a 2pm start time has helped screw this race over, normally they would've started an hour earlier. I love Spa, I don't think today was unraceable if they'd started much earlier. Thought perhaps looking to move the race to before the summer break alongside Britain might not be a bad idea

That's true, and that's how they've called it.

However, when a red flag is shown there's a 1 lap countback for the results, hence the results have been officially declared after ONE lap, which means in the Sporting regulations (article 6.5 if you're nerdy enough), no points should have been awarded...

And that’s why they went out again for another trundle behind the safety car after 3 hours and 11 minutes. To make sure there were enough laps.

It’s shameful really, just done to avoid paying refunds or coming back later in the year.

As I said, the two laps required for points to be awarded (as shown in the Sporting Regulations Article 6.5 below) are more than the ONE lap completed on red flag countback, as shown in the official results, also below.

Unless there's some other magic number of laps in play somewhere, 1 is less than 2.

I thought they ran two at the start before the red flag and then went out for the late trundle to get to three. But I was at the game so am only going on what appeared to happen. Personally I don’t think it is worthy of points and a podium in either situation.

Good explanation here. Not that I agree with it

Kimi retiring at the end of the season. He has been great entertainment both on the track and especially over race radio. I’m going to miss him.

If it is even half the film that Senna was it will be tremendous. Straight on to the must watch list.
