The Definitive TWF Wolves XI Thread (2019 version) - 1970 - present

Froggatt
Jonny
Douglas (for set pieces alone)

Vinagre hasn't played enough football unfortunately. Jarvis and Sako wouldn't suit that role at all. Don't think Kennedy ever had the legs to play as a wingback, even when we first signed him.

You loved Naylor though Dan. Called for him to play left wing IIRC.... ;)

I did used to defend Ower Lee quite a lot from the "BLOODY HELL NAYLOR" gang. He's from my hood innit.

Oto
Doughlas
Goldborn

Joined in at this stage just for the mispelling lola...

Jonny
Douglas
Vinagre

I don't care that Vinny hasn't played that much- no one else fits as well as he does in that third slot.

Will tot up these votes over the weekend but for now, the panel at the Old Gold Club (Rae, Richards and Edwards) came up with the following team to rival the current team (players they played with, except they cheated on one):

Murray

Palmer
Munro
Lescott
Parkin

Hibbitt
Ince
Bailey
Wagstaffe

Bull
Dougan

And yes, they stole my bloody idea. I should claim royalties for this shit.

Did you manage to stay in your seat when they said Ince?

It was Alex Rae. He's one of about three people in the world who I'd allow that shit from, and one of the other two was sat next to me (and he would never say that).

That team would be ace in a 4-4-2 although I'd probably go for Irwin for Palmer

In his prime yes but now when he was playing for Wolves at the end of his career; whereas palmer played the majority of his games in the top flight for Wolves.

I see a lot of revisionist thinking on how Irwin played for us. He was a dressing room leader and provided stability and calmness on the pitch, but his legs had already gone when we signed him and wouldn't be mentioned as being anything better than ok if it wasn't for his prior career. For Wolves Foley was the far superior player in the team that got promoted 6 years later than Irwin was when he was here

Bit harsh on Irwin, yes his best days were gone but still a class player, as for Palmer, I really liked him, wad a good solid player that gave his all for many years but not top class imo.....I'll concede Foley would be a better option, I'd forgot about him

Not a fan of Irwin here (although I'll accept he had an influence behind the scenes that we don't see). He was bog standard 6/10 in the second tier and outright embarrassing in the PL. Teams used to actively overload the back stick when he was playing as they knew he couldn't jump any more. We conceded so many goals like that.

Superb full back in his time, that time was not at Wolves.

Jonny 74
Douglas 23
Froggatt 19
Parkin 16
Naylor 10
Vinagre 5
Golbourne 4
Ward 3
Camara 1
Kennedy 1
Thompson 1

Says a lot about our weakness in that position over the years that we binned of the collective second best after one season

Christ that's a landslide!

Jonny is good. Time will tell if he's that good.

Has Douglas done much with that wand of a left foot since he left us?

Douglas, like Doherty came into his own at wolves at a time when wing back was the position for him. Defensively he isn't great and most would agree that Doc isn't defensively brilliant either. Douglas success as a lwb has not been replicated at Leeds as as lb he can't defend well enough.
