You'd hope 3/4 of those would be back for the tournament which would make a big difference

That's most of a T20 top order though you can file Bairstow, Buttler, Livingstone in a similar category or Hales from outside the team. Root doesn't play this format (rightly) so Malan is your only accumulator. Like the 50 over team it's always going to go pear shaped on the wrong day. It's why I incorrectly thought we wouldn't win the WC in 2019

I still think Root would play the Malan role better than Malan. Especially now he’s freed up of red ball captaincy duties. Nobody ticks over at one a ball or rotates the strike better than Root.
