The Cricket Thread

The England total feels probably 120 short. Excellent innings by Root let down by some really shit thinking elsewhere in the order.

BTW Root is now less than 2,000 test runs behind the seemingly uncatchable and imperious total set by Sachin Tendulkar. He should do it before retirement.

Most of my growing up years it seemed that Gavaskar's 10,122 test runs would never be beaten. (he retired in 1987 which seems later than my fuzzy memory credits). He is now in 14th on the list.

I stormed out of the ground after the Smith dismissal and went to the pub, in the words of Nathan Lyon, absolutely filthy.

Two Joe Root tons have really put the icing on what has been a real trip of a lifetime (ignoring the result)

Once again though, bowlers have been really sub par. I don’t understand Carse at all, especially with the new ball.

That drop from Jacks was quite something.

We don't need a fielding coach though guys.

14 dropped catches in 4 and a half tests.

Two bowlers up to standard (three if you include the injured Archer) the rest of the quicks are shit. An obsession with bowling short and wide and trying to bounce teams out. Spin options not really a telephone book more like a scribbled name on the back of a fag packet.

Keeper - seems a settled option. Shame he gets out like a fucking idiot in unforgiveable fashion.

Batting - one utterly world class batsman. The rest in a competition to see who can give their wicket way with the highest degree of stupidity or poor technique.

Apart from that, it is ace.

I’m not having that James Anderson couldn’t have still done a job. I was told only express pace and bounce succeeds in Australia but Scott Boland is quite the opposite.

I mean, I haven’t played cricket properly in about 10 years but if I’d been roped in to fill in one weekend I’d have caught that.
Let's not forget that he's ostensibly our spinner, but 54 overs in and he hasn't bowled a ball.

So he's a specialist number 8.

For me England really haven't treated this series seriously . . . a staggering level of incompetence which is especially galling as this Aussie team isn't that great (their pace attack is very good but their batting is very ropey).

England have only won 2 Ashes series in Australia in the last 40 years - both were built on a very solid opening top 3 and a good attack with a variety of pace and spin.

Australia have excellent back up options in Boland and Neser. Doggett as well. So they haven't missed Hazlewood and Cummins that much.

Bethell bowling and gets Travis Head.

Almost as filthy as them bowling Labuschagne pies but without the idiotic shot.

In all honesty 3-2 would paper over some crevices. 4-1gives them nothing to hide behind and is a fair reflection.
We have one world class batter, 1 world class all rounder and 2 very good quicks who are never fit. Outside of that we have some average tripe especially playing outside of England.
Sadly looks like there’s nothing coming through the ranks either to make a significant contribution.

Part of the problem is it genuinely seems some of our team think they’re doing just fine. Living their best life. I don’t really care who the alternatives are, I’d happily never see Crawley or Duckett again. Outside of Root, Stokes and Archer (assuming Wood is gone) I’m finding them hard to like. I do accept that for most of them, the attitude I don’t respect is coming from the very top.

Not taking Sibley was a big mistake. Plenty of people predicted Duckett would struggle given he he likes to hit every ball rather than leave plenty. The decision not to was borne of arrogance that Duckett and Crawley would play every game without stopping for a second to consider they might need an alternative. The selection of Bethell ahead of more worthy candidates again smacked of “we know best”, and what the hell is Jacks doing there as a spin option if when he’s needed he bowls less overs than Bethell?

Sadly we’ve got exactly what we deserve. The only people deserving of sympathy are the fans and Root.

Can't say I've seen much of Sibley since he left Warwickshire but his game would have had to dramatically change for that to come off at international level. It used to be said of Alastair Cook that he only had three shots, Sibley barely had two. Couldn't rotate strike at all.

Hameed possibly had a case, he's been excellent for Notts.
