The Cricket Thread

Decent knock, if our bowlers fire we’ll win. But that’s a big if.

Wickets here and there will slow the run rate down hopefully

In relative terms beaten comfortably. The bowling is too samey, fast and lacking variation. Buttler and Livingstone played themselves in and got themselves out when we needed to put the peddle down.

Yeah, you'd think with a platform and 15 overs to go it was made for those two. Neither of them did anything.

The bowling was never great when we were in our 2015-2019 peak tbh. We just outscored teams. Problem now is that as opposed to having seven proper options as we often had in the Bayliss years (wasn't uncommon for us to pick say Woakes, Archer, Wood, Plunkett, Rashid, Stokes and Mo all in the same team) we've gone in here with what you might generously term four and a half bowlers. If one of your four has a stinker like Carse did (and anyone can on any given day) then you're in massive trouble.

And of course we compound that by having our sole bowling reserve as Overton, who can neither bat nor bowl to anywhere near international standard.

Just a bit of a middle of the road performance nothing terrible but nothing great. Carse was struggling with his length all second innings.
Batsmen probably left about 20 runs out there but that’s in hindsight I’d have taken setting them 352 before a ball was bowled.
Australia were very good in the field probably a bit tighter than us too.
As @Deutsch Wolf says we don’t have the batting power to simply bat teams out of matches anymore.

Buttler again get in then out trying to pull a short ball, horrible irresponsible shot.

Time up for Buttler as captain but who knows who takes over. Root won't do it again, Brook can't buy a run in ODIs, Smith has hardly played, Rashid doesn't strike me as a captain nor does Duckett.

Shouldn't be seeing Salt or Livingstone again in this format.

Captain crap shot with some big balls ups gets himself in twice in the last 2 games then gets himself out. Probably gives up what would’ve been enough runs to win both matches.

Being a wolves fan who likes cricket your pretty much guaranteed being disappointed all year round by sport

By this time next we'll have been hammered in the Ashes so Key and Baz will be fucked off and we can maybe look at trying to win games of cricket rather than entertain again. I'd imagine we'll be looking for a new Test captain then too

In fairness there's not much wrong with the Test results. Pakistan doctored pitches to a ludicrous extent otherwise we never lose that series. Battered NZ away in the two live games. Comfortably won at home last summer. Were definitely the better team in the last Ashes and Aus got away with 2-2. India away....well we just aren't equipped for that challenge.

What we all said years ago regarding 50 over cricket is coming home to roost, how is anyone supposed to thrive in this format when they never ever play it? Muddled selections all round here (Smith at 3 being the oddest of them) and at least three players in Salt, Livingstone and Overton who have no business being in an ODI set up, two of them are T20 cloggers and one is the kind of shite we used to pick in the 90s.

Vaughan was berating some of the batters this morning for approaching the game like a T20 not a 50 over innings.
Why might that be, Michael?
