The Cricket Thread

It is, very impressive and actually quite emotional.

A ton and a hat trick on the same day for Tom Price for Gloucestershire against the Pears. It might be the first time it’s happened in first class cricket.

According to Radio 4 news this morning it is.

Worcestershire are an odd team that seem to be feeling the effects of several years cost cutting. Lurch from the sublime to the ridiculous in a week. Have a squad that contains older heads that are on their downward career trajectory [who were never quite top level in their pomp], youngsters on the way up [who will never quite be top level I doubt] and a World Class overseas pro that somehow seems to score tons for fun for Pakistan and yet struggles to hit it off the square for the mighty Pears.
In a story all too familiar in cricket at any level, the good youngsters seem to have to move on to get national recognition and players needing to find another club/franchise for the summer Hundred can't help either.

Early days but...

Thrash Derbyshire in the season opener and then capitulate against Durham the week afterwards. This time around have Gloucs 8-4 and then 45-7 but will still probably be 100 adrift at the halfway stage.

Strauss has left the ECB.

From the Gruniiad.

The announcement came on the day it emerged that the men’s Hundred could be abandoned in favour of a new Twenty20 competition, with the ECB said to be concerned the new format has failed to catch on internationally and was not as appealing to the cream of international talent as the widely played alternative.

Who would have thought that pissing about with something that was successful wouldn’t work?

Crawley scored just 11 in two innings against Middlesex.

The failure and Covid did play a part in the first season was to attract the cream of International talent. Once that failed to happen and they saw subsequently it wasn't up to much then all you are left with is a competition watched largely by people on the piss with no real association to the teams involved

Warks heading for an innings defeat at home. In itself not great but Surrey didn't even make 300.

4-26 from 6 overs for Robinson this morning.

Tbf Smith will smash us regardless of practice against a div 2 attack

I'd have him open in the Ashes. It's not perfect, but gets rid of Crawley and keeps Foakes

It's trying to turn a circle into a square whatever you do.

I don't think he'll open, nor do I think Stokes will (that has been mooted by some if he can't bowl much/at all).

Some cunt of an IPL owner chatting shit about binning 50 over game and reducing test cricket to short tournaments in set windows so that more franchise cricket can be played as it is “what young people in India want”.

Politely, fuck off, and then fuck off some more.

I do wonder if we will end up with test cricket played by second rate players.

IPL owners are buying up franchises in other countries and looking to give players full time contracts. That'll be a given for the likes of Pollard, Gayle, Bravo etc who are already players for hire. The danger to English cricket is what happens if they offer someone like Harry Brook £10mpa? The ECB won't be able to compete. I can see the compromise being certain months when it's agreed they'll be no Test cricket worldwide. We've already written August off in this country because of our own stupid tournament
