I don’t really know about that but would assume “pushing on” at that time would’ve meant tax-payer investment, in the form of further subsidies for private companies, tax-breaks, protecting profits and the like. And also any long term vision with a strategic plan which any government chasing short term votes to avoid being kicked out at the next election is always going to struggle to get behind.
I think that’s fundamentally why we’re seeing the sovereign states come to the fore and the realisation they’re virtually impossible to compete with. Not sure what the answers are but the thought the only option might be a managed decline is pretty depressing tbh.
Interesting company. I lived less than a mile from there and followed them very closely indeed, as did anyone that knew what was happening. They never needed the AIM and went straight to the main LSE at flotation in 1998. Almost 50% increase on the first day and were the darling of the stock market at the time. Eventually delisted when acquired by SoftBank in 2016, for what Google says was $32 billion.
I’m not picking a fight here, but similarly to LJ’s frustration at missed opportunities elsewhere, in an increasingly less significant democracy I’m not sure how we can stop the flow of all of that into the hands of the sovereign states or the immense private wealth of the likes of SoftBank either.

We have a 3 year old VW ID3.

We're thinking of a Skoda. All electric.
A half and half is not a runner for us.
It's either a full diesel or an all electric
We know someone who has an MG. Say they wish they had'nt got it.
By the way, it won't be new, maybe a year old.

Volvo. The XC series get great reviews.
I guess you’ve got two decisions there, diesel or electric and then on to the make and model after that.
I’ve been pretty outspoken about EV’s but criticism is reserved for government strategies and directives, who is driving those and with what agendas, but its pretty obvious they have a place and many of them are fantastic. If an EV fits your bill and is as effortless as their proponents suggest I’m not sure why you’d consider a diesel?
I got rid of my diesel for an 18 month old petrol, planning to keep it 3 years, on the basis that would let the EV chaos settle down and bridge the gap when it would become clear they wouldn’t effectively become mandatory or the latest generations had the sort of mega range required to eliminate any away-from-home pissing about.
In retrospect that was a big mistake. Petrol engines are just crap and should’ve kept the diesel. Seriously tempted to switch back and enjoy one of the 2023/24 bad boys while they can still be found and to buy a bit more time again, but I guess how it’s financed and whether it’s leased etc would affect those choices.
I don’t envy you, it’s all a bit of a pain in the arse at the moment which is why I suppose more and more people are not changing if they don’t have to.

Thw two biggest issues on our local FB news feed is parking and dog shit on the pavements.
When I've felt the need to park slightly on the pavement (narrow roads) Ive always been careful to leave enough space for a wheelchair/double buggy. Not ideal but do my best for everyone.
The parking around some of the local estates is often appalling, mostly its student accomodation where you have what were originally 3/4 bed houses now with 4 or 5 occupiers, all with a car each and sometimes with mates staying over.
Interesting article that, I’ve often been irritated by pavement parking and never really understood the rules which appear to vary council to council.
It does say clearly though “Pavement parking is currently banned outright in London and Scotland".
Really??? My daughter has a house in Thames Ditton and pavement parking is a nightmare In the evening when everyone’s home the whole length of the footpath is blocked. You could barely squeeze a toddler through and even getting through the garden gate can be an issue. There are no yellows, no permits required and no restrictions, but you can’t just block the whole path surely? And the apparent London blanket ban would put all that beyond doubt anyway?
I dunno, maybe it’s something that has gone on for years and is just accepted and the driving residents would be a bit buggered if restrictions were imposed and/or enforced so everyone just turns a blind eye, but I do wonder if I’m missing something, how could this in any way be legal?
Not great but are there any laws being broken there? Definitely feels like it’s out of hand and something needs to be done, but I guess that’s easy to say if you’ve got your own driveway or are able to just get on a bike/bus/train with ease whenever you need to.

Id also throw those into a similar mix who park about a metre from a junction. Nearly always a row of parked cars in our street with a lwb transit at the end as you pull into a main road.
No visibility as you approach the junction in either direction, usually ending in a 30m+ reverse if im not seen.

That pretty much sums up the situation for an awful lot of drivers and there’s no fun in that for anyone.
Can’t imagine anyone wants to live like that and looks like they’re trying to make the most of a bad job. I’m sure they’d all love to come home at night to the luxury of their own driveways in their tax-advantageous 60 grand EV’s and plug them into cheap overnight electricity but maybe the picture is misleading and they do but instead all just choose to be fucking cunts
