Summer 2022 Transfer Window

Rumours gaining pace on social media that Neves is ready to sign a new deal with us. I guess we can all live in hope?

For the first time in a few years, I will be pleasantly surprised by the folk in charge if we manage to keep hold of him AND sign Nunes. Especially if Moutinho signs the one year contract offer that’s on the table.

Neves, Nunes, Moutinho, Dendonker & MGW as options in the middle is a marked improvement on last season & would also allow Cundle to go out on loan.
My shout of stand firm on the valuation, new deal with a release clause could potentially happen then 👀.

Personally still think he will go, but if we keep him for one more year and manage to as nunes, then fair play.

We do need more than just nunes, however.

PSG have got hold of our old target list. Now in talks with Sanches (presume a Milan forum is currently going nuts at their owners, considering they have been after him for months).

Scenes when Kiefer Moore rocks up in Paris

Kieffer Moore is entirely not what we need, agree with all of that.

But I’d have money that he’d have a better goals record than this season’s “impact sub” Fabio - who somehow managed to score zero goals in an entire season.

Moore would have shit housed at least one.

We start needing to play to Fabio's strengths then, we get zero balls into the box to find players. Moore wouldnt score for shit in this team either. Neither would Ronaldo, Aguero etc ect.

Lage hardly used him. There was a spell where he wasn't even getting five minutes off the bench. A couple of times where he played pretty well and got dropped too. Blame the manager.

Fair points.

There was definitely the feeling that Lage didn’t fancy him, yeah.

But then, I can see why. Chicken and egg, I guess.

His performances improved and although we are far from the most creative of teams he never really fills you with confidence when he does get chances. I am still far from convinced, not sure he has any stand out attributes. Hopefully his performance leves continue to improve which should buy him more minutes to see if he can start scoring.

I've said it previously but you can see the development in Silva's all round game.

When he first joined he looked like he'd struggle to run into a gentle breeze but he did often find himself getting half decent chances when he got on the pitch just that his finishing, particularly with his head, was often too tame. Last season he looked like he's much better equipped to compete physically with defenders, even if he wasn't going toe to toe as such and shrugging people off he was at least using his body well to shield the ball and buy fouls for his efforts. Didn't seem to get himself into goal scoring positions as frequently though.

I think the two could possibly be linked. When he was unable to compete properly in the wider game it made sense for him to focus purely on being in the right place at the business end. Find the gaps wherever you can, avoid the physical battles and hope someone can pick you out or you get a lucky run of the ball, which kind of worked for him to an extent. Now he's got a bit more in his locker it's drawing him into other parts of the pitch and being involved in moves earlier which naturally draws him away from the 6 yard box. We've seen him running the channels a lot more this season than last, with mixed results.

Now it probably needs a bit of focus, both with him as an individual and the wider team, to make sure he can put himself to use in the most effective way. He needs to balance being that outlet and providing the interplay to build attacks alongside getting into the box to try to finish them off. You can say the exact same thing of Jimenez too, who seems to have had a complete reluctance to attack the 6 yard box this season, not that it was ever really his calling card before that.

Most of Silva’s chances last season were headers and unfortunately he is woefully lacking in that department. If, and it’s a big if, he can improve his heading he would certainly start to look more like the player we all hoped we’d got when we paid £35m. An early goal could see his confidence rocket and we just might see an improvement next season like we did, goals apart, this season.

The eye test tells me that there was a definite improvement from year 1 to 2 even though the stats don't. I don't think he's ever going to be the player Jeff thought
he'd bought, but equally we don't use him in the way he'd be most effective. He's not a drop back, hold the ball up type number 9, yet apart from when we throw him on for 10 mins here or there that's what we expect of him. You can see he does look to make runs in behind, but we pass sideways trying to find the hole in the defence rather than looking to hit the player who makes those movements. He needs to work either in a 2 or with different expectations on the 9.

When it comes directly to him it's time to forget the £35m generational talent and just see if have we got someone functional for the squad or hopefully the first 11. Never, ever forget it when judging the idiot who signed him though.

Silva doesn’t have the pace to be making runs off the last man, nor the instinctive finishing ability of an out andout striker like Abraham.

He’s far better in a Kane/ Firmino style role as a deep lying forward holding the ball up and playing a quicker forward in or as a second striker.

His problem is MGW and Raul are better 2nd strikers/ deep lying forwards and for all his faults Hwang is far better at making runs off the last man and is more of a natural finisher than Silva.

I think we all have to realise the lad is going to be an average Championship striker and we’ve been sold a dud.

He looks a plenty good enough footballer to come short and be involved in the build up to me. He doesn't appear to have any glaringly obvious stand out feature to his game right now but I think he's fairly well rounded, though some will no doubt say he's just equally shit at everything.

In terms of investment I think if he can get to the level Jimenez was a few years back that it's a success, but wouldn't diminish the huge risk in paying such a big fee so early. If he got to that level you might get 5-10 years out of him as a genuine top half PL forward, or at least some club does, compared to the 2-3 years Jimenez had at that level for pretty much the same outlay.
