Stats and Analysis Thread

FWIW it's Podence over 90 minutes

Semedo is 3rd or 4th and RAN is much lower.

I thought it was interesting that Semedo has a higher value for this than RAN and Marcal

Wolves have signed up to an agreement with StatsBomb. They provide data and data analysts for football clubs.

Wonder if this is driven by the data guys at the club or management seeking a change and consequently new style.

Does beg the question who was doing the analysis before and on what data.

I don’t think it changes that much, just means we have a better source of data.

our deputy chief scout is very data driven. I imagine it’s how we identified Mosquera, for example.

StatsBomb is a bit wider than player data for scouting purposes, their match analysis stuff is excellent which is why I thought it may lead to change.

Could be interesting.

Bruno certainly speaks well about the tactical side of the game.

I do love his subtle nod to the "you don't need to be quicker if you're smarter" mantra.

I thought this might be interesting, but actually I don't think it is.

It suggests we have more possession down the attacking flanks than our opponents have in the same areas defensively. Of course we do, teams aren't going to play possession football around the sides of the 18 yard box.

Brighton look impressive though

Think it highlights the lack of cohesion, 3 seperate blocks where Wolves find themselves on top. Can keep it at the back or keep it down the flanks but there's precious little to join things up in between. The yawning chasm from the opponents 18 yard box back to halfway a real long term issue.

Or it shows we utilise the long pass from Coady / Neves to the WBs often. Which we do.

It's why we create so little, for sure.

It's a shame we see so little of the sort of thing that lead to Moutinho's goal the other week.

That goal was a brilliant example of the problems it causes defenders when you get the ball into those areas. It forces them to make decisions and with that comes the possibility of mistakes and situations to be taken advantage of. If they don't get closed down you're in a great position to take a shot around the edge of the box under little pressure, if they come out to the ball then you have the option to play quick exchanges and get in behind them.

You're not going to get those situations when you keep the ball 40 or more yards out or right out on the wing. Defenders don't have to commit in those positions, they'll sit off in their shape and wait for you to lump it in to an area where you have numerical advantage.

I wouldn't mind if we were good at crossing. But we aren't.

Podence and RAN can put in a good dead ball but that's about it.

We do quite often try to pull the ball back to where Moutinho scored from (or at least think about it), its just there's usually no-one there. Hwang was good at being there at least.
