Shamima Begum

Amazingly, I don't just sit here desperately waiting for your reply so we can have an argument.

Do I think lawyers are underpaid? No. Do I think essential services should be better paid? Yes. Are you comparing like with like? No.
Are you setting up an argument that's completely unrelated to whether this lady should get legal aid, or whether legal aid work is adequately compensated? Yes.

Amazingly I respond to snark, such as apples and trouser and cherry picky. Like with like is two people starting two jobs at the same time. Touche.

Anyhoo thanks for agreeing that they are not underpaid, that the jobs on my list are more deserving of our efforts to get a pay rise than lawyers. Amazing how some can argue and yet basically agree with me in the same breath.

Personally I think that legal aid is there to protect those who cannot afford proper efficient representation whenever required. I believe the families at Hillsborough should have had their cases supported via legal aid and , whatever we think of Ms Begum , so should she. She is entitled to a fair trial and that is the british way. Personally what she did, what she has been documented as saying and her general attitute leave me with little or no sympathy for her plight, but that does not mean she should not be treated fairly. My issue has always been , I dont actually think she will be convicted of anything and that is where the shitshorm will really start because the islamaphobes will have a field day.

I have two students. One is going to a law firm , one is joining the police. Both have a law degree. The starting salary is the starting salary. The girl going to the law firm is getting 28k. The police officer is starting on 19 , albeit he will get an increase in his first and second years, he will be several years in before he gets 28k. Now granted, there is no requirement for a law degree to get in the police. The argument was being made that Lawyers are basically giving their time for free doing legal aid work.

On your last point Derbyshire police have announced all applicants will need a degree going forwards. Higher ranking officers (seargent and above) will need a Masters. My MSc is choc full of high ranking officers... I'm not sure if this is a nationwide thing or limited to just Derby but even if the latter it won't take long for other force areas to follow suit.

Your student might actually be ahead of the curve by getting their degree. It's another debate but police won't see an increase in wages for being graduates despite earning that degree.

When I was designing police training the initial police learning development programme was mapped to enable a foundation degree initially by Centrex then the NPIA now the college of policing. The colleges strategy was for police officers to be degree level educated.

Additionally forces like the met take their numbers from met specials who get no pay and cover a large amount of the initial course as specials so they have even shorter paid training time. It may have been tweaked a bit as I am 5 years out now. The principle is that they training and commitment is unpaid then you start at 19k. You have been a special for a minimum of a year. Still the Tories fucked over the nurses in the nineties, police in the noughties and the fire service is next.

I presume as he is in prison in Syria they could simply send him back anyway.

His would be a simple one. If his Mum & Dad are guilty of funding terrorism by sending a couple of grand to him then surely an easy charge and conviction for terrorist acts against him.

You would hope.

Being held in a Kurdish prison at the moment - not sure how much control any other power has over them really

Interesting the tone of the reporting is very different to Shamima Begum - lots of talk of mental health etc. All rather unsavoury compared to how a young girl is treated.

He went , voluntarily to fight for a state that we as a nation were opposed too. Being old fashioned in The world wars of the last century he would have been considered a traitor and Shot or hanged.

He has made his bed. Lie in it.

He is being held by the Kurds at the moment - they want an independant nation covering SE turkey & NE Irag (the original homeland ran down into Iran, but suspect that they don't have designs on that).

Doubtful that they will release someone quickly who has figured in UK national papers.

And he can lie in it in a British prison. I have no problem with that.

At 200k a year high security. I have a problem with that. But that's the system. Personally, if he comes back rehabilitate him, have him go round school's, colleges and university's for the next decade preaching the ills of radicalisation then he will have paid for his treachery and shown he is commited to peace and living as a citizen.

I've always been able to see both sides on this one, but Patel's gloating comments are unnecessary if predictable.

"We can't have anyone who would do us harm enter our country", says Patel. Funny that, she and the entirety of her government and party don't seem to have a problem letting representatives of the Saudi regime enter the country. Wonder if that has anything to do with the billions they and their cronies can make by doing business with them?

Bring her back and put her on trial. Just make sure the jury didn't see the beheading of Kenneth Bigley and the burning alive of the Israeli pilot that they fed onto social media because she might be seeing a long stretch.

It was a Jordanian pilot

When I saw this thread had been resurrected I'd assumed someone had posted the Southend news network post about her and corbyn, was put on that site as a pisstake(like the post about corbyn being unfit to be pm because he once had a curry with skeletor from he man) but was quoted in many comments on the BBC have your say as fact.

I'm not going to link it,because I can't due to old iOS system, just go to Southendnewsnetwork.net it's there as the first headline, but read the article
