Drawing lots is a rubbish idea. Why not go back to qualifying record or have penalties at the end of the game?

At least that way it's down to the teams involved.
 
I don't understand why there couldn't have been extra time and penalties. Effectively flipping a coin to see who goes through is ridiculous.
 
I suppose the teams in limbo aren't always going to be playing against each other in the final group game though are they? So you can't use extra time or penalties in this one instance because it won't fit every scenario, has to be something they can apply across the board.
 
In terms of GDP per capita Mali are slightly more affluent. Both countries are significantly below the average though

Going to extra time would put the winning team at a serious disadvantage in the next round. I can maybe see going straight to penalties, but is that really any better than drawing lots in the first place?
 
Yes. At least they have a say in the outcome.
 
See Marks point regarding the Countries that are level might not even be in the same city.

You could have an Under 8's type penalty shoot out after every game, the results of which only come into play should teams finish level in the groups. I'm being silly now though!
 
I still say using their qualifying record for the competition is the fairest way.
 
There has to be some sort of way of using factors that happened in the game to split them? Shots on target? Fewest number of cards/fouls?

So you want to use results from what 6-12 months previous to the tournament to decide? Results that were potentially gained using a completely different set of players? That's before you even get to how much bias some teams would get depending on how easy or difficult their qualifying group were.

At least drawing lots is 'fair'.
