Rugby World Cup Japan 2019

Some of the Japanese handling was exceptional - some great tries. And then they follow it up with that defence in the last minutes. Wow.

South Africa are in for one hell of a game.

It's not a shock at all.

Japan are 8th in the world rankings and Scotland are 9th.

The shock was Uruguay beating Fiji. Or Japan beating Ireland who were much higher in the rankings.

Japan MUST be put into the Rugby Championship or the Six Nations. They are clearly better than either Italy or Argentina at the moment. Rugby Championship would seem the best destination as they have a team playing in the Super 14.

Sorry, I really know nothing about rugby. Just listening to the sports saying Japan have never reached a quarter final etc. So I thought it was a shock.

Totally agree they must be allowed to develop, six nations would be a bit of a trek though !

Thing is you are looking at a 9 hour flight from Tokyo to Oz. 10 hours plus to New Zealand. Goodness only knows how long to South Africa - its something like 18 hours plus with a stop at Hong Kong or Singapore by the look of it.

It's 12 1/2 hours to London by comparison.

17 hours plus. Stop in Auckland and / or Santiago. Its fooking miles!

So, we have our quarter final line-up

ENGLAND v AUSTRALIA - this should be a cracker. England to win by 5 points is my prediction
NEW ZEALAND v IRELAND - I know Ireland have beaten the ABs recently but I think the NZ machine is purring into top gear at the right time. NZ by 15 points
WALES v FRANCE - depends on what France turn up, but I think Wales are the better side. Wales by 10.
JAPAN v SOUTH AFRICA - oh god I cannot wait to watch this one! I think it is going to be an absolute epic. Everything in my head says close Boks win, but I am going to let my heart rule it. Japan by 2 points.

We always say that about the French but how many years since consistent convincing French performances, really.
If Wales play to their ability I see a 15 point win .

I'm worried about the Aussies, not been great so far but there is always a performance in them and they always raise their game for us

I'd say the first game will be the closest, although if both teams perform to their best I would expect England to win.
I expect NZ to shift up another gear again and beat Ireland. I know there are concerns about Welsh injuries, but apparently news is good about that, though I would expect them to beat the French regardless. And with the huge home support lift if Japan keep doing what they have been, I expect them to beat the Saffers.
Long way out, but much as I'd like an England/Wales final, I think the boys in black will take another one...

If England hit their straps they are capable of beating the All Blacks. Ireland might be, but have shown scant sign of being at that standard in this competition.

I am hoping for a Wales final berth and I don't really care who we play if we get there. Let's face it, eight really good teams have progressed and the quarter finals should all be very decent fare.

Would have preferred the England game to have switched days - will have to rely on the intermttent wifi on SW trains & Cross Country as will be catching the 7.15 from down here to come up for the Soton game.

Still the Japan/SA game should be interesting for the Sunday morning (should be up early enought to see the Wales/France one though would expect Wales to come through that without problems unless France have one of their, occasional, days when it all comes together)

I'm quite confident for the weekend. France have only beaten Wales once since the semi final in 2011 (where Wales missed five very kickable points at goal), and that's when they cheated by bringing props back on to cover "injuries" for the last scrum of the match. I'd be very disappointed if we fell at this hurdle.

Pretty much the only cyber-esque nonsense superstition I have is that Wolves and England rugby team very rarely win on the same day..

On a brighter note I sat next to a 2015 world cup winning all black on a flight yesterday - he thought England were favourites. Even better he was a scrum half so still seat room too.
