Rob Edwards - the prodigal son returns

I do understand the criticism of some of his selections, in game management and doubts over his ability to get us back up next season but I don't agree with the pelters he's getting for being happy we won a game

It's been a thoroughly wretched campaign so anything that goes against the standard frustration and disappointment 100% deserves to be celebrated IMO. Let him, the players and the fans enjoy the moment.

Helps that all my in-laws are Villa fans, of course

YMMV but he doesn't have the unlikeable arrogance of GON - I think he always comes across as a decent guy

There will be alot of relief in that celebration , also with it being a local rival. No issue with it myself.

By the same logic we aren’t criticising RG for sliding on his stomach celebrating as last minute goal. Just a stick to try and beat hook with, when there are plenty of others

In the moment I have no problems celebrating a win it’ll annoy the Villa fans how we celebrated too and will reinforce their arrogance and bad loser status.
It should be back to normal this morning though, no dining out on this go and back it up. If he proceeds to end the season badly then that should be that for him.

The good

The level of commitment he gets from the players is genuinely impressive.

They are clearly much fitter than before.

They are harder to score against.

The bad

Odd selections - Hwang, Tchatchoua.

Odd substitutions.

The results! It's still only two wins. Which is really shit.

On a side note, I absolutely LOVE how Rodrigo celebrates every goal as if he’s just scored the winner in a cup final. It’s ace.

Can't disagree with any of that. Injury time was pretty tense in the stadium as Villa were threatening to equalise and almost did seconds before the break that lead to our 2nd so understandable that anyone of a Wolves persuasion went absolutely nuts as it confirmed the win, a win not just over our lauded local rivals but also one to finally get us past Derby's wretched record

As said now the dust has settled you can’t help but have a bit of regret at some of the games we let slip however this is still one of the worst 3 squads in the league so still think we’d have gone down anyway.

Don't have a problem with Edwards celebrating the win in the manner he did, football is all about emotion so go for it.

I do have a problem though with the needless digs/jibes that he feels he has to direct at the supporter base.

Not necessary and perhaps a bit more humility wouldn't go amiss as when is all said and done he's getting paid for doing this whereas the supporters are paying and giving up their free time.

Of course we don't have anybody at the club with the intent, vision or experience to deliver that. So we'd end up with Santi Bueno on the halfway line chasing shadows.
Leave Santi out of this.

He’s been a shining light in what’s otherwise been a complete shit-show of a season. I’ll keep saying it, but he should be our captain next season.

I do agree he's been pretty consistent this season there was no Santi Slander just that a high line isn't his wheelhouse was my point.

It remains to be seen how he'll cope playing just 10-15 yards further forwards next season. We won't be expected to defend our box for 90 minutes so I'd hold on the captaincy for now.

The squad is terrible, but it’s been turning in performance after performance with no coherent plan to score that means we don’t even have any skin in the relegation game at this point. And that’s on both managers. So of course the plaudits he’s about to get in the media are 100% as misjudged as they were for GON. It’s pat on head stuff for Wolves fans.

Doesn’t mean the team, manager and fans shouldn’t enjoy last night. Fck it, it’s meant to be fun after all. Mood in the stands turned around with one compelling, purposeful period of play. It shouldn’t have been impossible for the leadership to create that before.

I've a fair few worries about edwards.
He's a Jeff shi appointment. Jeff shi made terrible decisions constantly. Massive red flag.
Worried about his nous, know how & ability to out wit other managers.
Very concerned we have no discernable style of play, & sometimes am uncertain what formation we're playing tbh.
Unsure he has really addressed our lack of creativity & goal scoring threat.
Some batshit selections.

That said, he has galvanised a squad that was pretty broken tbh. There is at least fight & pride.
We're harder to score against in the main.
Significantly for me, the past 2 or 3 home games we have been a much better team in the 2nd half. I'll accept the 1st half performances have been poor, but he has made positive changes.

I lean more towards get rid at the end of the season, but he should be doing everything to prove he's worth giving a chance.

That's a fair point.

It's been a long time since we've had defenders who need to be on the front foot.

Don't particularly care about the celebrations, but I do find him quite grating. Not nearly as arrogant as GON, but the Humphrey High Performance vibe he gives off is hard to warm to.

We do look harder to break down, which he deserves some credit for given we looked like conceding every other minute at the start of the season. It does mean we've played most of our games under him without even trying to thread coherent attacks together, let alone score goals. We were never going to stay up playing like that. It had to be a wholesale change at both ends of the pitch.

The team selections are the most concerning thing for me though. He stuck stubbornly to a shape that kept delivering losses and has continually picked players who, week after week, are turning in some of our worst ever individual performances in this league. I have very little faith in our ability to build a competitive team next year if it's him/Jackson doing player evaluation and taking charge of recruitment.

Now we have more than 11 points, he's here next season no matter what. I think it's a mistake, but may as well get behind him until/if it goes south in late Summer/Autumn

Yep, I understand the concern.

I’m holding on to the fact Coady proved it’s not all about pace in the Championship (and above) if you get the system and style right. Santi could play that role with the right players around him.

I just think, he’s got on with it. He hasn’t moaned when he was in or out of the team or gone off sulking like others. He won’t be one of our high earners and really is the type of player we should be looking to keep around next season.
