REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

I agree on the Tesla, it's a beauty. I think the electric cars suffer from range and charging time. We have a Leaf and at 100 mile range it isn't great but then it costs us less than 4 full tanks of fuel a month of our C-max to own and run it.

Newer electrics will do 200 miles plus and charge to 80% in less than 20 mins.

And really no to diesel being cleaner than electic. UK has a very high % of renewables.

I'd love an electric car, but I don't have a driveway or garage to plug it in.

200 miles is nowhere near enough.

I know someone who has a Tesla. He lives in Norwich and works in Leicester and says he has to leave his radio and lights off to be able to do the journey.

200 is enough. I've driven 40 to 50k business miles a year for well over a decade. Anyone driving more than 200 to 250 miles without a stop is an idiot.

We can go back and forth on this all day. No it’s not.

You’re also saying that someone needs to stop if they’re doing 100 unless every office, site, etc. has a charging point.

That's not a battery problem, that's a charging/infrastructure problem. As Tredman says 200 to 250 miles is a lot to do in one go.

I could get away with charging once a week if it did 200 miles.

Eh, that not what I said? I said if you can stop every 200 miles and do a 10 min recharge to get another 200 then that is fine. Which it is, for almost every business user I know - loads would actively like to swap to electric, as do I.

Every motorway services has Tesla chargers, usually 8ish.

It’s not a lot to do if you do it every day.

I don’t drive distance everyday, but I’d only stop for dinner.

I quite regularly do 4 to 500 a day, but would always stop every 2 to 2.5 hours. Anything else is just dangerous.

There can't be many people driving 1,000+ miles a week, surely?

I used to do on average 4 to 5000 a month, bit less these days as I prefer the train or plane.

You may be in luck soon then Bear as the government are looking at lamppost chargers as a solution to the infrastructure problem.

You'd be fine with a leaf and at less than £4 for 100 miles you'd be laughing.

It won’t be long before there is wireless charging built into main roads that charge cars while they are being driven...unless electric cars are Betamax and some other power source becomes the leading technology.

Okay, so I have a meeting in Bangor, which is about 100 mile and the place I’m visiting has no charging point. At some point in the way back I’m going to have to stop to charge.

Only issue I have with that is arseholes coming along and unplugging it or nicking/damaging the cable. Also means I have to find a parking spot next to a lamp-post which isn't easy on my street which is always rammed.

That's the point though with a Tesla you would do 200 easy, same with the new VW MEP platform. Plus loads of businesses, car parks, supermarkets and others have chargers.

I presume they have an ordinary plug socket?

The cables lock when you lock your car so can't be taken out. Patking bays may have to be put on roads like they are in London.

TSB is right in that wireless charging via cats eyes are the way to go. The problem becomes who then earns money?
