REFERENDUM RESULTS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

To be clear I DO want them to block it. Very much so.

Because at the moment we have a government trying to railroad through back of a fag packet legislation and that is frankly not fucking good enough.

Democracy didn't end on June 23rd. It's about more than a vote. It's about the process whereby the people are in power.

This is why I stepped away last night. I knew you didn't understand what was being said. I'm still not even sure you do now and until you do I don't think you can have a credible discussion.

Exactly. THM just chooses to see what he wants to see. It was pretty clear that Trips (and everyone else who was contributing last night) was suggesting that they didn't believe the process should be blocked. As far as I know Paddy is the only one who has suggested this. All everybody else has suggested is that the correct procedures of our government and parliament should be followed and that includes the House of Lords doing the job that it is there to do.

You can't say you voted for sovereignty and then complain when you see it in action (unless of course you don't understand how our parliamentary sovereignty actually works).

I'd also love to know that why, in THM's version of our democracy, my opinion now no longer counts because I was on the losing side of the referendum. Does that also mean that because the political party I voted for didn't win the election that I now have to accept all the policies the Conservative government without complaint or protest because they won a very slight majority in a democratic election?

I would piss myself whole heartedly if the Lords blocked the bill. I am pleased that we are following process. I am concerned at what could happen if the Lords block the bill. What that would do is give a voice to the far right that liberal lefties and commies [ I am using their type of phrasing for those feeling in any way sensitive] are blocking the will of the people. I may have this wrong but there were about 800 seats of which 90 are elected by the lords themselves. If that's right then they have no right to block it unless they have real concerns that content of the bill is conflicting existing law. Be prepared foir some amendments though!

It's pretty fucking hard not to have concerns about a bill that says "authorise us to do something. We don't have any info about HOW to do the something, or indeed what the potential benefits are or the potential pitfalls, but THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE says do it you fuckers*

*or we will try and abolish you again

I think you should go and chain yourself to the railings of the Lords. You may not change their vote but you could give some great abuse! I would pay to watch that { and for those of a sensitive nature I am joking, like Frankie Boyle does)

I expect the Lords to do an evidenced, objective job not Derail the bill because they can. That would be petty and an abuyse of privilege

I am pleased that we are following process.!

See, there is somebody who voted leave who understands how it is supposed to work. THM thinks he gets 'ganged up on' because he has a different opinion to everybody else. This is not true. I disagree with pretty much everything Cyber posts but you can at least have a debate with him.

Having different views and opinions helps the debate. Posting irrelevant nonsense does not.

I didn't see much rumbling on here when the Lords blocked the proposed Tory Tax credit legislation. It seems to me that some like to pick and choose when a constitutional body can exercise it's function.

That was fucking painful reading.

I don't know why I bother reading it all, but at the same time can't stop reading it...

Ah but the Tory Tax credit legislation wasn't at the behest of the WILL OF THE PEOPLE (sic. will of the 52% of people that voted)

But that's the crux of all this isn't it. 40% turn out for the PR vote. 72% for the brexit vote. Protests about Trump who has actually not committed human rights abuses yet, while the Chinese leader, whose country has and does, is welcomed with minimal fuss. Its human nature I am afraid

As much as I would like to see the bill amended (or possibly sent back) having to rely on the unelected anachronistic crony filled house of lords sickens me. If they do block it and are then abolished it will be the best thing to come out of the whole mess.

Welcome to wolves Mr Fawkes, bugger wrong house

Net migration expected to fall by less than 15 % following Brexit.

Shows what a great place to live the UK is.At least those coming will need work permits or similar and need to have jobs so economic migrants, which was the real elephant in the room, will go or at least reduce. Stick some tough rules on non UK citizens claiming benefits and its job done. Then get on with improving the infrastructure.

Broadly, what sort of rules should there be on benefits for non-UK citizens?

Don't get them would be the answer but that's too harsh so a minimum of 5 k in the bank when they get a work permit and no benefits payable until 1 years minimum NI subscription paid and I would be happier. Then a maximum of 3 months whilke you look for a new job over herer to start the process again.

Refugees and economic migrants are different things - something most of our media seems unable to comprehend.
