Preston North End (A) build up

Surely Tex is more Hoolahan than Costa in that formation?

Not so sure. He did play a diamond like:

Crofts
Smith -- Surman
Hoolahan

So maybe it would be like for like where:

Crofts = Saiss
Smith = Price (maybe Coady?)
Surman = Tex
Hoolahan = Costa

I'm aware of how he played at Norwich but Price and Teixeira would be way down the pecking order to play those roles. Much more likely to be Coady and Saville IMO for Saturday!

No creativity and Lambert played with creativity at the heart of his midfield. Be it range of passing from his DM or quick feet and direct running from his CM and creativity and goals from his #10.

Swap Smith and Crofts. You can't ask/rely on Tex to do what Surman does/did. Too much defensive and team work to be done in the three 'deeper' midfield positions.

Smith was definitely the box to box man with Crofts the deeper ball player and defensive type. I don't agree with you on your last points I think he can, we just haven't seen him do it yet but then no player has had direction yet.

Whenever I saw Crofts he was right of the diamond and used to chip in with goals. Fox or Korey Smith the anchor player.

I guess we saw different systems then.

Yes, I saw the correct one! David Fox, holding midfield player. Crofts box to box. I've even watched YouTube highlights recently of the Norwich side.

Can a neutral settle this please?! haha!

Didn't he end up with Howson and Johnson as the wider midfield players eventually?

I'd have thought a workhorses like Coady, Edwards and Saville were better suited to those positions. There's a lot of running to be done there, supporting the forwards when possible and covering fullbacks too. I just don't see Price having the legs for it and Teixeira is too flaky to be relied upon.

Agree, but Edwards' lack of quality on the ball may see him lose his place in a Lambert side.
He likes a deep lying midfield player (Fox, El Ahmadi, Westwood) and then two players infront who can play forward quickly and neatly (Crofts, Surman, Johnson, Lansbury, Ireland, Delph, Bannan)
He didn't always play a diamond, he changes formation to suit. In the Premier League they played 442, 4231, 433 and the diamond. He will rotate players but usually when its a formation change and will play an individual in his best position. Seems to know what a player can do in each formation and will rotate/change them accordingly.

For Saturday I'd expect him to stick with the 433 and keep our best players in their best positions, i.e. Costa and Cav as wing/forwards. Saiss infront of the back four (Price/Evans maybe suited here too). Think the other two central midfield players will be slim pickings. Coady and one other you'd think for now but this is where we're really lacking imv. Not sure Edwards and Oniangue will suit his preferred style of midfield player at all, although I know Edwards and Saville are suspended anyway for Saturday and can't play. Prince may get a chance I guess.
He also likes a big forward so you'd think he'll love JDB and hopefully give him plenty of confidence to find the back of the net again.

Preston have been doing quite well recently and are just outside the playoff places.
We'll do well to get a point IMHO.

Bright Enobakhare is very high up in Lamberts thoughts already! Could be involved, even in first XI!
But also is involved in 'other' discussions within the club at the moment!

Other could mean anything.

Pretty worthless putting it in the post

Saville is suspended

Don't think so.

He has 3 x league yellows and 1 cup yellow, so 4 altogether.
Also on 4 yellows are Batth, Saiss and Tex.

Prince has apparently joined the long list of injured players.
