Pre-season friendly thread

It was vaguely similar to the way I remember Uruguay used to set up when Alvero Rios played, he'd play as a DM but sweep into the wingback defensive positions so the wingbacks would play as auxiliary attackers.
Arevalo Rios was brilliant, looked like a warrior and played like one, seriously underrated player, loved that Uruguay team with him in it.

Haven’t read the last 7 pages. Been at a wedding so had a few. But surely mid table is fine this year? Read a few comments about top 7. As lovely as that would be, it’s such a crowded arena. Yes we finished there back to back. But let’s be honest, we were very fortunate to have no injuries.

since then, your Everton’s, villas, etc have spent money. We haven’t.

a mid table finish is currently the best we can hope for IMO. I don’t see 3 signings with what we wil potentially be getting changing that

that’s not a bad thing. We just maybe need to realise where we are

All that is fine and I'm OK with it, but let's not forget that's a fairly significant shifting of the ownerships goalposts
On the surface a fair enough comment, but it's so weird to me how the forum attitude and dynamic has changed.

Not aimed at you at all TT, but it used to be accepted wisdom by a lot of prominent posters that we were just a mid table team punching above our weight, that we should be glad we're not still in League One, that people complaining were doom merchants, that taking Fosun's ambitious comments at face value was daft, and that we should wait a significant amount of time before making judgements.

Check out this thread which is less than a year old, it's startling (there are more, but I cba to dig much more on a Sunday morning)

The amount of crap Cyber got... He'd be a moderate on here now! I especially enjoyed jd1981 popping up to lecture him about waiting till the end of the entire season before making judgement, when the same poster was literally saying yesterday the Celta Vigo game was enough time gone to voice his concerns! 😅 Bless you mate

This is a great way of looking at things.

When the planets align regarding form, injuries etc then we're capable of 7th. When these things don't align we aren't near that level.

Shit, just 'liked' one of Pornkings posts, the end of days is nigh

You know what I could pick so many holes in that final statement but I really can’t be arsed to go round in circles as so often happens.

I’m happy with mid-table, my concern is that an inexperienced manager and a squad of players assembled to play in a different way is going to make it tough. Failing to strengthen the weak points down the spine of the team make it tougher still. This combined with a fixture list that could see us with very few points by the end of September leave me thinking mid-table is likely to be the best we can hope for. Obviously we have to play every team twice at some point but with a new manager a little momentum could be vital to help settle things, conversely a poor start could see whatever confidence we start with drain away quickly and if a few things go against us we could be looking down not up come the winter.

Pretty impressed that my post made sense, not going to lie.

my concern I think is if we look since the first season in the prem, teams around us have strengthened, whereas, for me we were arguably stronger the first year we came up (starting 11 wise). That’s where my concern lies.

don’t get me wrong, if we finish mid table for the next few years I’m fine with that.

as for the owners moving the goalposts, I get the frustration. However I perhaps put it down to niavity on there part. I don’t see how any team is expected to break the top 4 anymore realistically with financial fair play.

Leicester have managed it but doubt they'll maintain it.
I'm OK with mid table for this season, provided we see an improvement in style and intent.
Problem with being satisfied with mid table is it only ends up going the other way

I'm sorry you (and others) feel that being 'called out' should only happen to other people 🤷‍♂️

call me out all you want I don’t really care it has zero consequences on my life far more important things going on to worry about.
To point out advising patience with the best manager in over a generation who’d more than proved himself isn’t unreasonable. Conversely having concerns about our readiness under a manager who’s yet to prove himself is neither unreasonable.
You’re looking at things with a far to rigid view point with zero grey areas.

No axe to grind with you mate, just mentioned you as the comment back then stood out compared to the attitude now.

Saying Nuno proved himself is fine, no one back then was saying 'sack Nuno', just voicing concerns. I don't think a good track record for a manager or player exempts them from all criticism?? Surely in elite sport you have to constant prove and prove yourself again?

Haven't Fosun proved themselves too? Surely our good times were down to a combination of them, Nuno, our players and even Mendes? Or is it all just Nuno now?

And how can Bruno prove himself when he hasn't even contested a PL point yet?

They’re an anomaly after one ridiculous season gave them a great launchpad. Hard to dislike leicester really

Everyone deserves a chance and I’m not calling for his head or anything my concerns is that I don’t think we’re absolutely ready to go next Saturday.
Fosun got it right with Nuno but got it wrong with Zenga and Lambert.
Time will and I hope he’s successful.

no, surely not

Why not join in the discussion as opposed to taking easy digs at an unpopular poster? You're a smart guy

I'm all for grey areas, just not a fan of revisionism, goalpost moving and born-again doom and gloomers

When we play well I'll say so, we were alright for most of the Stoke game.

Not many of the other games and the first halves against Las Palmas and Celta were embarrassingly bad, even if they are "only friendlies".

I think we're likely to lose all the first three games and at least one of them will be a thumping - you can blame the board for that if you like, or the manager, or take up the lunatic Twitter argument that this is all Nuno's fault (!) - but it doesn't foster enthusiasm, not least when the manager's CV in senior management wouldn't fill a side of A4 and our executive team are so unfit for purpose that we increasingly seem entirely reliant on Mendes for incoming transfers.
